I looked up, bored and disinterested as I stared at the agent, everything about him, from the sound of his voice this name, Agent Davis, irritating me to no end.
He flipped through the document in front of him and shook his head, his expression unreadable. “Your passport identifies you as Bianca Davinci?”
“I don’t know,” I said dryly. “It’s right in front of you. You tell me.”
“I just did.”
“So why was your statement presented as a question?”
He raised a brow and clasped his hands together on the table. “Things are not looking good for you, Miss,” he muttered, holding up my passport. “You flew into the United States with a fake passport…”
“It’s not fake,” I shrugged, ignoring the loud thumping of my heart in my chest. “The information there is real…”
“But it’s not yours,” Davis cut in, tossing my passport in front of me before flipping through the document once again. “So it’s fake. Your real name is Rozaliya Valerio, correct?”
I dug my nails into my knee, biting my lip so hard that I tasted copper.
I wanted nothing to do with that name.
Nothing.
I tipped my chin up. “I don’t know who that name belongs to, but it’s not mine…”
“Listen,” the agent said, slamming the document shut. “The fake passport and identity theft are one thing, but your name links you to a very notorious family. I’d advise you to start talking, or else…”
A knock sounded on the door.
I flicked my eyes towards it, wondering who could be here to interrogate me yet again.
I was tired of talking, but ever since I’d stepped foot on American soil, that seemed to be all I’d been doing.
I was sick of it.
Agent Davis rose to his feet and headed for the door, pulling it open.
He immediately squared his shoulders. “Special Agent Hernandez. I’ve been expecting you.”
“What’s the update?” Hernandez asked, his voice deep and intimidating, the complete opposite of Davis’s.
“She’s not talking.”
He didn’t respond, and they stood in silence for a moment before Davis stepped aside and Hernandez walked in.
There was an instant shift in the air.
I kept my eyes lowered to the floor, watching his dark shoes as he moved closer and closer until he finally stopped in front

of the desk.
Do you realize how serious your offence is?”
His deep voice broke the stifling silence, unnerving and filled with authority.
An authority that instantly infuriated me.

I snapped my eyes up, and they clashed with the darkest shade of brown I’d ever seen. He looked like a man ut saght out of a child’s nightmare, everything about him, from his hair to his suit, dark and intimidating.
His features were sharp, so sharp that it was hard to tell whether his face had naturally been sculpted that way or whether the permanent-looking scowl on his face was responsible.
“Do you talk?”
I snapped out of my trance, raising a brow as his harsh words settled in the air.
As much as I couldn’t deny that his appearance had caught me off guard, I was once again reminded that looks did nothing to conceal a horrible character.
Or a lack of manners.
“And if I don’t?”
“It would be easier to throw you in prison, then,” he retorted, picking up the document from the table and skimming through it.
My stomach churned, dread settling deep within me as I watched him.
I was in trouble. A lot of trouble.
After finding out that the deranged man I was betrothed to wanted to marry me, every last bit of restraint I’d held onto over the years had snapped.
He’d killed Artem… my boyfriend.
Bile rose to my throat, and I gnashed my teeth together to hold it all in as the guilt threatened to rip me apart, my blood seeming to freeze in my veins.
I didn’t love Artem or have feelings for him.
I didn’t have it in me to love… or fall in love.
It was an odd concept, one I’d absolutely despised from the moment I discovered that the first people who were supposed to love me… my family… had gone on to arrange my marriage to a total stranger I’d never even met.
However, my lack of feelings for Artem didn’t mean his death hadn’t hurt me.
He was the only man who’d dared to risk his life to date me, knowing he could be killed for it.
He’d told me, “I don’t care if he’s dangerous, Rozaliya. I’m as much of a man as he is.”
I’d always known Artem had a death wish by dating me, and I should have talked some sense into him… but how could I when I was just as desperate to rebel?
And now he was gone…. just like that, and my parents still wanted me to go through with marrying his killer?
I just couldn’t… I can’t.
