I trapped Alvise’s thumb between my lips, pulling on it until I felt him tense. “And what happened after I showed hp?”

He moved closer.

Impossibly closer.

“Tell me, Arabella,” his deep voice filled the room once again. “Are you trying to distract me?”

I shook my head almost immediately, heat flooding my cheeks. “No. I’m merely listening to you.” I cleared my throat. “You were saying something? Please continue.”

His grip on my chin tightened until I could feel the pressure, but then he gently smoothed the spot with his thumb.

I could feel the tension emanating from him… The hesitation.

He didn’t want to continue speaking, but I wanted to hear everything he had to say.

“Did… you think about me?”

He didn’t respond.

Silence, lethal and excruciatingly unnerving, settled over the room, so deep that even my uneven breathing could be heard.

Minutes passed, and all he did was stand there, his fingers still wrapped around my chin.

“Did I think about you?” Alvise finally spoke, a hint of disbelief in his voice as he lowered his hands from my chin to my shoulders. “The question should be…” He leaned down, his lips brushing against mine. “When did I not think of you, baby?”

“Hi… why don’t you get in so we can swim?”

I choked on my cocktail, coughing profusely as I stared at the lady in the pool, specifically the one who had just invited me to join her.

“Thank you…” I cleared my throat, trying to compose myself. “But I’ll have to decline. I can’t swim.”

“You can’t?” The pretty brunette gasped, her eyes widening. “Girl, what have you been doing all your life?”

I chuckled, wiggling my legs in the pool. “I don’t know… being scared of water?”

She burst out laughing. “That makes sense, but you’re missing out, though. Swimming is so much fun.”

I grinned. “I can see that.”

I was sitting by the edge of the pool in a swim dress, sipping on a cocktail while my mind was still wrapped around my conversation with Alvise four nights ago.

After saying those words that had practically melted my heart, he refused to answer any of my other questions.

Instead, he went down on me and ate me out until I fell asleep.

Literally.

And then the next morning, he was gone… Yes…. gone.

is was supposed to be our honeymoon, and I’m pretty sure couples are supposed to spend time together during their honeymoon.

But here I was, on the fifth day of our trip, and I’d barely seen him.

He would leave the hotel room before 6 a.m. and return past midnight.

On the first few nights, I tried to talk to him and find out what was going on, but he would simply kiss me and tell me go back to bed.

And when I refused, he would say, “Please, baby. I’ll be back soon.”

But that was a lie.

“What’s your name?”

I snapped out of my trance, looking back at the brunette as she swam closer to me.

“Lucia,” I said, smiling politely. “And yours?”

She raised a brow. “You sound British. Are you?”

I groaned inwardly.

Here I was, trying to fake my name and identity, but my accent gave me away every single time.

“I lived there for a while,” I muttered. “And what about you? What’s your name?”

“Caroline,” she said, her brown eyes glinting with excitement. “I’ve been literally depressed being here alone with no friends. to talk to, so it’s nice meeting you…”

“Madam.”

I looked back, surprised to see Igor approaching me with hurried steps.

“What is it?”

He opened his mouth to speak, but then his gaze shifted behind me, and his shoulders tensed. “You’re not alone.”

“Obviously,” I scoffed, rising to my feet and slipping on my sandals. “What’s the problem?”

He cleared his throat, tipping his chin up in an unusual manner, and I furrowed my brows, wondering what was wrong with him until it clicked.

“I’m in a swim dress, not a bikini, Igor.”

He pretended not to hear me.

I sighed. “What were you saying?”

“You have company,” he said, gesturing towards Caroline before turning around. “So please follow me.”

What was so important?

I turned to Caroline, waving my hand. “Nice to meet you, but I have to go now.”

She frowned. “And here I was, getting excited. Is that your man?”

I stifled a laugh, shaking my head as I wondered what Alvise’s reaction would be if he heard someone mistake Igor for my partner. “No, he’s not.”

“I see you around, right?”

I nodded, turning around and walking away, even though I wasn’t sure if I was ever going to see her again.
