Chapter 118: Sound of silence
Dante’s pov
I was about to say something, but Jade collapsed in my arms.
I picked her up and took her to our room.
She had changed back to her normal self.
I couldn’t help but tear up as I looked at her.
This is why she was so stressed the past few days.
This is what she meant that time when she said a monster.

Had she told me, had she shown me before, then she would know that she can never be a monster
in my eyes.
Not now and not ever.
I caught Mrs Bennett’s scent, and a few seconds later, she knocked on the door.
I let her in, and her eyes landed on her daughter and then on me.
“She going to be okay, all she needs is a goodnight rest,” she said, and I nodded.
“There is something I would like to tell everyone. Please join us downstairs,” she said. I nodded.
“Thank you so much for this,” she added and went back downstairs, and I followed her.
What happened to Jade?
How did she end up this way?
I got downstairs, and it was so quiet you could hear a needle drop.
No one made a sound or even attempted to move.
They all just sat there as if they couldn’t believe what they saw.
I sat down, and Mrs Bennett took a deep breath.
She started telling us the story and how everything happened the way it did.
How her mother lied and turned her daughter into something.
“Grandmother would never do that. Your daughter was always a monster,” Sasha said, and Mrs
Bennett smiled.

“I once told Jade this. What you look like on the outside doesn’t make you a monster. But it what is inside your heart that makes you one,” Mrs Bennett retorted.
I watched as she looked Sasha straight in her eyes and smiled.
“I am your mother, and I raised both of you. If you ask me who is the real monster, I will be able to tell you,” she added.
I looked at her, I always thought she was this terrible mother, but now I am seeing a different side
of her.
I thought that she was willing to kill Jade all for Sasha’s sake, but I was wrong.
“Why didn’t Jade tell me?,” Addison asked.
“She was afraid that you would view her as a monster. And that’s not who Jade is. Even I told her
never to transform in front of others. The power she yields in that form deadly,” Mrs Bennett
explained.
“Oh well, I bet something like that takes a toll on the body. What should I make for her as breakfast
to tomorrow?” Mom asked Mrs Bennet.
I watched as the other woman’s eyes widened at this.
“Lentil soup, she is going to hate it but make her that,” Mrs Bennet answered.
“Well, then let’s also have a little BBQ tomorrow night. Let’s cheer sister-in-law up,” Nick suggested.
“That sounds good. It will cheer her up,” Addison nodded with a smile.
Mrs Bennett looked around the room as if shocked and confused.
“You don’t think that she is a monster?” She asked, and we all shook our heads.
“Even if we did, it wouldn’t matter because she would be one of us,” Piers said.
Mrs Bennett seemed confused as she looked around the room.
“One of you?” She asked them, and they nodded.
“Look around you. You are surrounded by monsters,” Felix pointed out.
You see, for the longest time in history, shape shifters were considered to be monsters.
People couldn’t understand how we could change like that.
And we know that the world labels what they don’t understand.
Werewolves were labeled as monsters for years.

After discussing everything, I went back to my room.
Jade was still sleeping soundly.
I always knew that she struggled growing up but now realize to what extent.
She was betrayed by her own grandmother, who turned her into something.
Not only that, but the same person who did this had the guts to act like Jade was some monster.
She had the guts to act like she was born that way when she was only created.
Mrs Bennett mentioned that this power comes with a certain darkness.
She spoke about how proud she was that the darkness didn’t consume her daughter even a little.
Jade is so strong, stronger than I realized, and I am happy to have her in my life.
I caught Sasha’s scent, and a few seconds later, she opened the door without knocking.
“Amazing, Dante, you saw ger true form, and still you are with her. She isn’t pregnant yet, so you
can still come back to me and leave her,” she said, holding out her hand.
“Have you always been this heartless? Shouldn’t you be asking how your sister is doing?” I asked
her, and she just shrugged.
“What use would it be pretending to care?” She asked me, and I scoffed at this.
“She is your sister. It’s alarming that you can be so cold towards her. It makes me believe that maybe you never had a heart,” I added.
“She is the one who turns into a hideous monster, then why are you acting like this? Do you
seriously want kids with her now? What if they turn out looking like that thing?” she asked me.
“I would rather have that than for them to turn out like you,” I retorted.
I watched as she looked at me with a frown and then stormed off without another word.
I looked around the room and at the many plants in our room.
Mrs Bennett explained that they helped her balance her magic.
I didn’t ask any further because I didn’t understand it at all.
Magic talk always confuses me every time. I mean, how does it work?
I looked at Jade, I know for certain that I have loved her for a thousand lifetimes, and I am more
than ready to love her for another thousand.
No one can get in the way of that, not ever, and that madman who thinks you belong to him.

I will kill him with my own bare hands no matter what.
I do hope that you know that you can never be a monster in my eyes.
