Winter cried uncontrollably, yet Margaret had little strength left to soothe her. She had worn herself thin lately.
I could lose nearly ten pounds without lifting a finger.
Even lying in bed, my stomach feels flatter than before.
Still, she never wanted to endure such harsh suffering just to slim down.
Since arriving in this new world, she had learned one harsh truth–power and personal skill came above everything else.
Until she gained both, she had no choice but to hold her tongue and bide her time.
This lashing from Christopher was proof enough. Without status or authority, she could only fight back in
secret.
Winter wrapped her arms tight around Margaret’s waist, tears still streaming down her face.
“You’ve wasted away from all this pain,” Winter mumbled through her sobs. “I’ll cook you a rich, hearty meal tonight to help you regain your strength.”
“Stop crying,” Margaret said, a dull ache throbbing in her head. “Your constant weeping is giving me a headache.”
Winter fell silent at once, wiping her eyes quickly. “I’ll not make a sound, Ms. Campbell.”
Margaret let out a sigh. “I planned to head to the Ducal Palace today. Now I cannot go, I wonder if Prince Theodore will blame me for failing to treat his poison.”
The mention of Theodore perked Winter right up,
“Ms. Campbell, Prince Theodore said you serve him now,” Winter urged. “Crown Prince Christopher struck you, and Ms. Stella Campbell mistreats you at every turn. Why not ask Prince Theodore to stand up for you?”
Margaret shot her a flat look. “Being in his service is not the same as being his family. Why should I let him stand up for me?”
Winter was confused.
Margaret added, “He shares blood with Crown Prince Christopher. No royal lord would turn on his own nephew for a mere servant.”
Winter hung her head in quiet disappointment. “I only thought Prince Theodore seemed kind and fair.”
“He is a good man,” Margaret said without hesitation.
The image of Theodore’s cold, quiet demeanor drifted into her mind unbidden.

He spoke little and carried a stern air, but his heart was kind. He had risked his own injured body to protect innocent villagers.
Even with his vital force sealed and his combat skills stripped away, he had faced danger beside her. He was truly a noble, brave man.
Margaret wondered how Lisa and the other villagers were faring now.
She had no real worries for them. Theodore was loyal and honorable, and he would have given those women safe shelter long ago.
He would have also dealt harshly with the cruel people who deserved punishment.
A maid’s voice suddenly rang out from outside the courtyard door. “Ms. Campbell, Mr. Campbell has returned. He requests your presence in the main hall.”
As soon as she heard those words, the stern face of her father, Timothy Campbell, immediately came to Margaret’s mind.
“Tell him I am unwell and cannot come right now,” she replied. “I will speak with him this evening.”
The maid delivered the message and left without delay.
Winter grew visibly nervous. “Mr. Timothy Campbell is home. We ought to go and greet him.”
“I would if I could,” Margaret said plainly. “My wounds are far too sore to walk all that way.”
Winter pressed her lips together. “I’ll slip outside to gather news, then. I’ll see how things stand and check Mr. Timothy Campbell’s mood.”
Margaret nodded, and Winter hurried out of the room.
Loud chatter and commotion echoed from outside the walls, as if a large crowd had gathered on the estate grounds.
