Chapter 116 All His Doubts Faded Away
Finished
“But I heard those men kept calling Ms. Stella Campbell cruel, hateful names while they beat her,” Winter whispered. “They shouted that killing her would earn them the antidote they needed.”
She shot Margaret a meaningful glance. “This feels strange to me. Could those attackers be the same men from the cliffside that day?”
Winter’s worry was well–founded. Margaret had poisoned that group back then and told them they would receive the cure only if they punished Stella.
That was why Winter felt so uneasy and anxious now.
Margaret had listened closely at first, yet her expression turned heavy once she realized she might be tied to the attack.
More trouble has landed on my doorstep. I never get a moment of peace in this place.
She spoke in a calm, quiet tone. “Where is Crown Prince Christopher? He traveled to Life Preserve Pavilion with them. Why did he not return alongside Jasper and Stella?”
“Word has it he stayed behind at the Life Preserve Pavilion,” Winter replied.
Margaret narrowed her eyes in thought.
That makes perfect sense. I slipped a poison trigger into his system earlier.
Without immediate treatment, the toxin will spread fast, rotting his arm and even threatening his life.
It seems Mr. Kingston at Life Preserve Pavilion truly has great skill. He must have managed to hold the poison back for
now.
It is not his time to die yet.
If he died, everyone would blame me for his death.
I have no need for more false accusations.
“Go back outside and keep listening,” Margaret ordered. “Come tell me right away if you learn anything
new.”
Winter nodded gently, “Rest easy, Ms. Campbell. Do not wear yourself out worrying over all this.”
She hurried out of the room once more. Her steps were unsteady and weak, clear proof of how much hardship she endured while staying by Margaret’s side.
In the courtyard outside the main hall, two bruised, battered men stood trembling on the grass.
Maids and servants gathered all around, watching the scene with varied looks of shock and curiosity.
Jasper stood before them, his own face covered in fresh cuts and dark bruises.

He stared down at the two men with a fierce, angry glare. “Who sent you? Speak!”
Nearby, Stella sat on a wooden chair, disheveled and shaken. She had changed into new clothes and redone her hair, but her swollen, injured face still showed every mark of the brutal beating.

Stella broke into helpless sobs. “I have never been treated so shamefully in public my whole life. I cannot bear to live anymore, Jasper.”
Jasper clenched his fists, burning with rage. Yet unbidden, Margaret’s past words echoed in his mind.
Every common man holds far more strength than you. You are weak, too fragile to protect your own family.
For the first time, he wondered if Margaret had been right.
He was far too frail, unable to shield his own sister from harm.
Jasper raised his voice and ordered the guards to bind the two men tightly with rope.
‘Refuse to talk?” he snapped. “Drag them to the dungeon and use harsh interrogation methods until they confess.”
Stella wept harder, her voice shaky and bitter. “Have them put to death, Jasper. They attacked me in the open street and humiliated me. I will never recover from this shame.”
One of the captive men spat and shouted in rage, “You heartless girl! You paid us gold to kill your own sister. She poisoned us afterward and left us dying in agony. We searched everywhere for you, begging for the antidote, yet you hid away without a second thought. Now you want us dead? You are nothing but a cruel, scheming liar.”
The second man convulsed violently, pain twisting his features. “My head is splitting apart. I cannot take this poison any longer. We were told that killing you would get the cure. I will kill you myself.”
