Chapter 174 Pushed Him Away
Christopher murmured, “You could’ve explained all this to me sooner…”

“What’s the point of talking about it now?” Margaret retorted coldly. “Don’t you think it’s funny to say that? Every time I tried to explain myself back then, what did you call me? You said I was cruel–hearted, that I kept slandering your kind Stella. You always looked at her with such pity whenever I even mentioned her name. What was there left for me to say?”
The moment her words fell, Christopher stepped forward abruptly and grabbed her hand.
He said earnestly, “You’re right. I did favor Stella far too much, and I know I was wrong now. Truth is, I’ll never make Stella my Crown Princess. Mother and Father both dislike her, and deep down, they’ve always preferred you over her.
“I’ve kept the position of Crown Princess for you all along. Even though misunderstandings grew between you and Uncle Theodore and made Mother misjudge things, too, I know Uncle Theodore doesn’t have feelings for you. I also know you haven’t fallen for anyone else, and that the two of you are completely innocent. I’ll clear everything up with Mother. Even Father’s royal decree can be reversed.”
He tightened his grip on her hand firmly, refusing to let go, no matter how hard she struggled.
Then he continued, “I know you’re way more capable than I thought. All this time, I never knew you’d mastered acupuncture. These days, I’ve finally realized it all–you secretly learned the healing arts just to cure my injured leg. My leg aches terribly every night now. You’ve perfected your skill, and you must be glad you can finally treat me, aren’t you?
“Maybe you’re right. My attitude toward you did slowly change after you gained weight. But judging people by their looks is only human nature for any man. I’m not the only one–even Uncle Theodore would be the same. I’ve noticed you’ve slimmed down a lot lately. You’ll soon be as slender as Stella. I see all you’ve sacrificed for me now, and I…”
Margaret pulled her hand free sharply, cutting him off, “You just don’t get it. I don’t have feelings for you anymore.”
She stared at him with cold detachment. “I’m telling you this plainly–I was blind before. From now on, I will never have feelings for you again for the rest of my life.”
Christopher froze in place, staring at her in disbelief, “Must you say such hurtful things out of anger? I’ve already humbled myself to you. Why do you still insist on being stubborn?”
Margaret’s tone remained icy. “How can I make you understand I’m being serious?
“You always complained about me throwing petty fits. Now I’m over you, and I’ll never pester you again. You ought to be satisfied–just stay away from me,”
“No.” Christopher’s eyes turned red with emotion. “You once swore you’d never marry anyone but me.”
Margaret sneered, “That’s only because you lied and promised you’d never marry anyone but me.”
Christopher gritted his teeth. “We were just children back then…”

“Exactly, we were young and foolish,” Margaret replied calmly. “Even if I did say those words once, it was only childish nonsense. I see everything clearly now–being with you was always a mistake. I don’t like you anymore.”
Margaret looked at him with the same cold, distant gaze he’d once given her on the cliff.
She continued, “I don’t like you now, and I never will for the rest of my life. This isn’t just angry talk. Face the truth. From now on, let’s cut all ties completely.”
“Margaret, don’t be so harsh,” Christopher said anxiously. “I know you’re just mad at me. I’ve always waited for you to soften up to me. If you’d only given in a little back then, I would’ve…”
Margaret let out a cold scoff. “Can you not understand plain words, Crown Prince Christopher?”
A wave of helpless sorrow washed over Christopher, and his words grew messy and incoherent.
He said, “If you’re this upset over Stella, I’ll marry you first and take her as a consort later. I’ll call off next month’s wedding with her right away. I meant what I said before about letting you both marry me–forget that promise. I’ll only marry you, and you’ll be first in my heart.”
Margaret said in a frigid tone, “Just let me leave. I have important things to attend to.”
Christopher frowned, then suddenly stepped forward and grabbed her by the shoulders, “I know why you’re saying this. Has Uncle Theodore really fallen for you? Could he even like someone plump like you? It doesn’t matter. I can find him plenty of beautiful, plump young ladies. Just leave his side, and agree to renew our engagement with me.”
Margaret pushed him away in utter exasperation. “How much longer will you keep pestering me? I’ve said it over and over–I can never forgive you for all the wrongs you’ve done me. And I truly have no feelings for you at all.”
Christopher ignored the sharp pain flaring in his arm and insisted stubbornly, “Impossible. I’m the only one you’ve ever loved. How could you forget me? You’re only scared of Father’s royal decree, afraid people will call you treasonous if we get back together. But I’m not afraid. Hardly anyone knows about this decree anyway–why should we fear gossip?”
