Chapter 188 Become So Sharp–Tongued

Timothy went on, “Stella is all but confirmed to be the Crown Princess, and Jasper will surely marry a lady of equal standing in time. That leaves only you. If you could become a Royal Consort to Prince Theodore, it would still be a fine match. After all, Crown Prince Christopher broke off your engagement–ordinary men would never dare take you as their wife.
“Your family background is no worse than any other young lady’s, but you lack talent and accomplishment by comparison. Take the daughter from General Hickman’s Estate, for instance; she’s long been famous and even favored by Princess Noelle. Then there’s the youngest daughter from Duke Hurst’s Manor–two years your junior, yet suitors have already lined up at her door. Word is she’s to marry the third prince soon.”
Timothy shook his head repeatedly. “As for you? Only Prince Theodore values you now. Who else would spare you a second glance? Make the most of his favor before he grows tired of you. You run about outside all day, yet Prince Theodore never restricts you. He governs countless affairs; if not for your slight usefulness, he would not even bother acknowledging you.”
He looked at Margaret with undisguised contempt and lectured on. “Crown Prince Christopher loathes you now, and Queen Norma holds you in disfavor. I even hear you were humiliated by Princess Noelle in the palace. She is King Spencer and Queen Norma’s most beloved daughter. To offend her is to earn King Spencer’s displeasure in time. You ought to realize how precarious your position is.
“Do not take my words as idle meddling. I only speak plainly because I care for your well–being. I would not waste such words on just anyone else.”
Margaret had long grown tired of his endless lecturing and wished to leave at once. Yet he was her father, so she could only stand there with a forced smile.
Just then, a young servant hurried over. “Ms. Campbell, Princess Noelle sends word inviting you to the palace tomorrow. She says she has matters to discuss with you.”
Timothy froze the instant the words left the servant’s mouth. “Princess Noelle?”
The servant nodded. “Yes. The messenger claims to be one of Princess Noelle’s attendants, and says the princess wishes to speak with Ms. Campbell on important business.”
Timothy stared in utter shock.
Margaret replied calmly, “Tell Princess Noelle I am occupied tomorrow and ask her to choose another day.”
The servant nodded and withdrew.
Timothy frowned, “Princess Noelle has invited you–how can you refuse? To anger her would be disastrous…”
Before he could finish, another servant rushed over in a fluster. “Ms. Campbell, Prince Theodore requests you come early tomorrow. He also says he will come personally to fetch you.”
Timothy was stunned a second time.

He stared at Margaret in disbelief, racking his brain to find any merit in her that could make Theodore go out of his way to fetch her himself.
Could he truly see her only as an ordinary healer?
Before he could recover from his shock, Margaret nodded quietly. “Very well. Tell him I will rise early and be ready.”
“Yes, Ms. Campbell.” The servant hurried off.
Timothy still stood dumbfounded. So Margaret spoke up. “Father, is there anything else?”
Finally, Timothy snapped out of his daze and stammered, “Why would Prince Theodore come for you personally? What is there between you two?”
“He must be suffering from worse headaches lately and needs me for acupuncture treatment,” Margaret replied plainly.
Timothy said, “I have never known Prince Theodore to hold anyone in such high regard. Whatever the reason, you must seize this opportunity.”
He paused, then added thoughtfully, “It seems I underestimated you. I thought only Prince Theodore favored you, yet Princess Noelle also seeks your company. How dare you refuse her invitation?”
Margaret said, “As you have seen, Prince Theodore has already asked for my time. I cannot attend Princess Noelle’s gathering.”
Timothy fell momentarily speechless.
When did Margaret become so sharp–tongued?
He said, “Princess Noelle is willful and arrogant by nature. Her invitation may not be well–intentioned. She may mean to warn you about your closeness to Prince Theodore. Do not anger her. Bear with her whims, no matter how unreasonable she is.”
No sooner had he spoken than yet another servant ran over in a panic. “Ms. Campbell, Mr. Kingston is here. He’s had a crate carried over, saying it is a token of thanks for your kindness.”
Timothy’s eyes jolted wide. “Which Mr. Kingston?”
“It is the renowned Mr. Kingston from Life Preserve Pavilion,” the servant said.
