Chapter 230 I Want to See You
He was handsome beyond compare, and his temperament was gentle and kind, too.
It would be fake to claim she felt no fondness for him at all.
Margaret said softly, “It’s fine. It’s still early. I’ll wait for him.”
Her stomach was already growling with hunger, yet she changed the subject anyway.
Margaret said, “I heard Prince Theodore and Ms. Hickman are childhood sweethearts. Is that true?”
She glanced toward Cyan by the door as she spoke.
Her tone sounded casual, yet it was obvious she was forcing nonchalance.
Cyan hadn’t expected her to ask this out of the blue, and replied earnestly, “You mean Myrna?”

Margaret nodded. “Yes. I’ve heard the rumor more than once. It’s not that I mind, but I offended her at the palace banquet, so I’m just curious about her. It’s not that I’m prying into her relationship with Prince Theodore…”
She stumbled over her words, suddenly feeling she was protesting far too much.
Cyan said calmly, “You don’t need to pay her too much mind, Ms. Campbell. As a general’s daughter, she’s nothing like ordinary, gentle young ladies. She’s broad–minded and wouldn’t dwell on trivial grudges. She’s probably already forgotten what happened at the banquet. Even if you did offend her, her straightforward personality wouldn’t let her brood over it.”
Margaret’s expression turned cold. “You think she’s really that carefree and open?”
“I do,” Cyan said plainly. “A truly scheming woman would never challenge you openly at the banquet, I could tell she only asked you to play the lute to compete with you. Since you play far better than she, she insisted on dancing herself afterward. She has no real talent for lute, chess, calligraphy, or painting–everyone who knows her is aware of that. She’s simply forthright and unreserved, never hiding her thoughts. It’s just the nature of a military family’s daughter.”
Cyan spoke casually, completely oblivious to how dark Margaret’s mood had turned.
She said, “So the rumors of them being childhood sweethearts are true, then. Even you speak of her so familiarly.”
“That’s just idle gossip among the nobles,” Cyan replied honestly, “She’s ‘spent more time by Prince Theodore’s side than most, but that hardly makes them childhood sweethearts.”
He added, “If you’re worried about offending her, there’s no need. With her easygoing nature, she’ll brush it off soon enough.”
“You said she challenged me on purpose–there must be a reason for that. With so many people present, why single me out?” Margaret asked meaningfully.
Cyan scratched his head. “Probably because she’s long held feelings for Prince Theodore…”

Finished
The second the words left his mouth, he realized he’d misspoken and hurried to correct himself, “That’s just my own guess, Ms. Campbell. Please don’t take it to heart.”
Sensing his fluster, Margaret said coolly, “Everyone says they’re in love with each other. It’s hardly just your personal guess.”
Cyan was about to reply when Theodore walked into the hall, and he bowed respectfully at once.
Margaret had already heard his arrival, so she dropped the topic and picked up her fork quietly.
Theodore said, “I wasn’t sure what dishes you liked, so I had the kitchen prepare a variety of options. Does. the meal suit your taste?”
“Thank you for your thoughtfulness, Prince Theodore. Everything is delicious.” Margaret nodded.
“I’m glad you like it.” Theodore sat across from her. “What were you talking about just now?”
Cyan, by the door, broke out in a cold sweat.
Margaret replied indifferently, “Nothing important.”
Sensing her sudden coldness, Theodore said softly, “You said the acupuncture treatment will end in two days. Will you still come see me afterward?”
Margaret stated, “With the acupuncture finished, naturally, I won’t need to come every day.”
Theodore fell quiet for a moment. “You agreed to give us a try yesterday.”
“I agreed to try getting to know each other–not to come visit you every single day,” Margaret said.
“How else can we get to know each other if you don’t come?” Theodore’s appetite faded completely, and he looked at her steadily. “I thought about it all night. There are many scenic spots around Breston. Once your treatment sessions end, I’d like to take you to see them.”
Before Margaret could reply, he added, “Even after I recover fully, you can still come visit me every day.”
Margaret’s lips twitched, not lifting her eyes as she kept eating. “There’s no need for that. We’re only getting to know each other–not formally betrothed yet,”
“I want to see you,” Theodore said gently, his gaze soft and sincere, “Being with you always feels calm and at
ease.”
