Chapter 244 Please Do Not Let Her Down

“There’s no use dwelling on that now. Saving Ms. Campbell from the poison is our top priority,” Cyan said in a low, grim tone. “If your guess is right, then she took the wrong poison by accident herself. But she’s highly skilled in healing arts–she’d never make such a careless mistake.”
Baxter hung his head, filled with deep remorse. “It’s only my own speculation. She always carries all sorts of strange remedies and potions on her person.
“This is all my fault for failing to protect her properly. She’d drunk far too much wine tonight, and I should have stayed extra vigilant. I foolishly assumed she’d be safe once she returned to the estate. I was far too careless.”
He lifted a hand and slapped himself hard across the cheek.
Then he said, “Crown Prince Christopher must have lost his mind entirely. He can barely walk without limping, yet he still dares to commit such shameless acts. He clearly planned to force himself on her- hoping to make her his, so she’d have no choice but to heal his injured leg for good. His intentions are utterly malicious.”
Cyan looked at Baxter’s battered, worn state and sighed softly, “You’ve already done all you could. If you hadn’t stepped in when you did, Ms. Campbell would have suffered far worse harm.”
As he said this, his gaze drifted quietly toward Theodore.
It was clear he was pleading leniency on Baxter’s behalf.
Theodore clenched his fists so tight his nails dug deep into his palms. “Focus all efforts on finding an antidote first. You’ve sustained severe injuries yourself–go rest now. Leave the rest of the matters to the
others.”
Baxter bowed respectfully. “As you command, Your Highness.”
He staggered and withdrew from the chamber.
Cyan stepped forward with a deferential manner. “Prince Theodore, I’ve just made inquiries. Crown Prince Christopher also suffered minor injuries and was carried back to the palace by his men. He didn’t come chasing after Ms. Campbell. He must know we’ve already taken her to safety. Shall we make arrangements to deal with him?”
Theodore said in a cold, restrained voice, “No. The antidote comes first. We’ll have plenty of time to settle our score with him later.”
Cyan nodded respectfully at the edge of Theodore’s suppressed rage, then turned and left quietly.
A short while later, Megan walked slowly into the room, holding a bowl of brewed herbal medicine.
She said, “Prince Theodore, the medicine is ready.”
Theodore said plainly, “Set it down.”
Megan begged, her eyes red, “Allow me to feed Ms. Campbell the medicine, Your Highness. Mr. Kingston said this poison brings unbearable agony to the body. She’s unconscious right now and feels no pain, but if

she wakes suddenly, the suffering will knock her out again instantly. She needs to take this pain–relieving tonic first, if there’s any hope of her regaining consciousness for even a little while.”
She knelt on one knee beside the bed, still clutching the bowl. “Mr. Kingston also added cooling herbs to the mixture. Ms. Campbell isn’t only poisoned–she was also exposed to that vile enchanting incense. Its lingering effects will harm her health greatly if left untreated.”
Theodore took the medicine bowl from her hands. “I understand. You may leave.”
Megan stayed kneeling on one knee, hesitant to leave. “I know I shouldn’t speak out of turn, Your Highness, but Ms. Campbell told me plainly that she holds deep affection for you. That’s why she grew jealous when she heard you’d gone to celebrate Ms. Hickman’s birthday feast. When I teased her about it, she said you’re noble, handsome, and outstanding–and that it’s only natural for her to care for you. She admitted her feelings openly and honestly. If you care for her too, please do not let her down.”
She glanced over at Margaret lying in bed, her tone full of sorrow. “She has such a kind heart. She treated me as a friend from the very day we met. If I’d known disaster would befall her tonight, I would never have let her leave the chambers alone.
“I know exposure to enchanting incense can ruin a lady’s reputation. But I checked just now–her maiden purity is still untouched. Please do not misunderstand her, do not look down on her, and keep this matter strictly confidential. If word spreads, Ms. Campbell’s good name will be destroyed forever.”
Theodore listened to every word in silence, then gave a rare, calm nod
Reassured, Megan quietly took her leave and closed the bedchamber door gently behind her.
Once the room fell completely quiet, Theodore picked up the spoon and began feeding Margaret slowly, one small spoonful at a time.
Margaret’s brows remained tightly furrowed in a permanent wince. No matter how he tried, she refused to swallow the medicine.
Theodore had no choice but to cup her jaw gently, easing her mouth open.
Even after the medicine slipped past her lips, she kept it in her mouth and would not swallow it down.
