Chapter 54 We Were Followed
She pulled the sword out with some effort. “Prince Theodore, you’ve got quite the arm–and your aim is incredible.”
Theodore walked up to her, took the sword, and sheathed it.
Just then, the ground beneath them made a noise.
Margaret didn’t notice. She bent down to get the snake’s gallbladder–but the moment she crouched, the earth gave way.
Before she could even react, the whole patch of dirt under her feet collapsed. She fell–along with the big snake–tumbling down with a heavy thud, buried in mud and soil.
Theodore didn’t jump to safety. Instead, as she fell, he reached out fast and grabbed her.
But everything happened too quickly. By the time Theodore had a hold of her–before he could pull her up–her body had already slammed into the ground.
A sharp, searing pain shot through her back. Margaret felt like her bones had cracked.
There were rocks underneath her.
They weren’t big–but they were sharp, like knives, digging into her spine.
The pain spread through her whole body. She looked up, dazed, at the hole above her.
What just happened? Did the ground collapse?
Or was there a cave down here all along?
She groggily looked around. It was a large cave. So they’d accidentally stepped on the entrance and fallen right through.
Every little move hurts.
Her wounds burned. Each time she shifted, it felt like someone was pouring salt on an open cut.
Margaret could feel that her back was wet–sweat mixed with blood. The pain was unbearable.
She tried to get up–and realized someone was still holding her hand.
Margaret sat up quickly. Theodore had fallen with her. And not only that–his back was covered in wounds, too. Blood had seeped through his clothes and was pooling on the ground….
Maybert’s just n imagination, but… right before we hit the ground, I could swear he pushed me.
She foland at the jagged rock beneath him, and her suspicion turned into certainty. Carefully, she helped hun move to the side. Then she pulled open his shirt and gently bandaged his back.
If he hadn’t pushed me, I would’ve landed on that rock.

One corner of it was sharp as a blade. It had cut through Theodore’s thick clothes and pierced his skin. The wound wasn’t deep–but it was still bleeding a lot.
No wonder he passed out.
If I’d landed there, I’d probably be dead by now.
There was no time to overthink. Margaret quietly took medicine from her storage space, applied it to every one of Theodore’s wounds, then pulled his shirt back on.
She was about to tend to her own back when clashing sounds came from above–like the noise of a fight.
Margaret froze. She listened carefully.
Yes–definitely a fight. But shouldn’t Cyan be the only one up there?
Who’s fighting?
Things had just gotten complicated. Margaret didn’t have time to deal with her own injuries. She swallowed a pill to dull the pain and reduce the inflammation, then shook Theodore awake. “Prince Theodore. Wake up.”
Theodore’s brow furrowed. Slowly, his eyes opened.
He saw Margaret’s worried face–and seemed to relax a little. But then he heard the noise, and his frown returned.
“What’s that sound?” he asked.
Margaret pointed upward. “I think someone’s fighting up there. I didn’t want to yell–I was afraid of alerting whoever it is. Did Cyan see us fall?”
Theodore tried to get up, but the movement pulled at his back wound, and he sucked in a sharp breath.
Margaret quickly said, “Your back is badly hurt. I’ve already bandaged it, but moving will still hurt. You’ll have to bear it…”
Then she added, “This cave isn’t very deep. We could climb out if we had to. I just don’t know what’s going on up there. Cyan should have come down to help us by now.”
