Said No to the Prince and Yes to the King novel Chapter 94

Only a few short days had passed, and Margaret could easily feel her body growing lighter. Her once round face had slimmed down noticeably.

The most obvious change was in her midsection. Days of light exercise and smaller meals had trimmed her belly, and the difference was plain to see.

She checked her pulse carefully. No trace of poison remained in her body at all. The extra weight from the poison faded quickly.

Even her old dresses hung loose and baggy on her now.

The thought crossed her mind, and she planned to call for Winter to buy her a set of smaller, betterfitting garments.

She called out again and again, yet Winter never stepped foot inside her chamber.

Margaret fixed her clothing and stepped outside at last.

She called out softly, Winter? Have you not risen

yet?

That’s strange.

On any normal day, Winter would have brought her morning meal long before this hour.

She walked slowly to Winter’s sleeping quarters and pushed the door open. The room was deathly quiet, and the bed sat empty with no one in sight.

She’s not here.

A sharp sense of dread washed over Margaret. Her gaze fell on a scrap of paper resting on the wooden table ahead.

Words were scrawled across the page.

Winter had barely learned to read and write, so she would never practice writing alone in her room. Margaret stepped forward at once and picked up the note.

The short message read, Come alone to the cliff on the back mountain. If you value her life, do not bring anyone else.

That single line made Margaret’s heart race with fear.

Damn it. Who would do this?

What do they want with Winter?

Stella was the first name that popped into her head. No one else was petty and cruel enough for such a twisted trick.

I could raise a fuss and gather the estate guards to head up the mountain. It would expose Stella’s true

everyone.

But what if Stella isn’t behind this?

What if the kidnappers kill Winter the second I lead a crowd up there?

She dared not take that risky gamble.

Still, Margaret refused to give in to fate.

I didn’t get a second life in this strange new world just to be controlled by others.

She crumpled the note tight in her fist and thought fast. She left her courtyard right away, heading straight for Stella’s quarters to check if Stella remained on the estate.

Margaret had only walked a short distance when she ran straight into Stella.

Where

Stella smiled faintly, You’re in such a rush, Margaret. Where are you off to in such a hurry?

Margaret frowned deeply.

She’s still here in the manor.

Could she truly have nothing to do with Winter’s abduction?

Margaret met Stella’s cheerful grin with a cold smirk, then said flatly, My whereabouts are none of your

concern.

She stepped around Stella and kept walking without pause.

Stella raised an eyebrow in amusement. Word travels fastyou scolded Jasper harshly yesterday. You spoke to him with no respect and no proper lady’s manners.”

Margaret shot back sharply, What business is that of yours?

Stella let out a soft laugh. It has nothing to do with me, of course. I only wanted you to know Jasper is heartbroken. He’s clearly lost all hope for you.

Her tone stayed calm. We’re blood sisters, after all. There’s no need for us to be so cold and distant. I know you’ve grown close to Prince Theodore and gained special standing lately, but still—

Save your fake pleasantries,Margaret cut her off without hesitation. Try acting this bold and twofaced in front of Crown Prince Christopher and Jasper. I don’t see how you keep up this act day in and day our without growing tired.”

She left immediately, giving Stella no chance to reply.

Stella called after her in a sharp tone, Margaret, did you poison me?

Margaret ignored the question completely.

Stella’s anger flared out of control. I know it was you. You’ll regret this, Margaret.

Margaret paid her no mind and soon slipped out of the Prime Minister’s Estate.

Finished

The cliff on the estate’s back mountainthat was the very spot where the original Margaret had once tried to leap to her death.

The snow had stopped falling weeks ago, and bright sunlight filled the days. All the snow had melted from the mountain path, leaving behind beautiful scenery. Even so, Margaret’s heart stayed heavy and uneasy.
