Separate Weddings, Separate Lives novel Chapter 39

Louisa studied Elijah's face. It was well-defined and sharp. If there were a standard for male beauty, he was it.

With his striking looks and powerful family backing, he could have had any woman he wanted. Yet, he had married her over a single text. From the moment she saw him at the altar yesterday, she had been suspicious.

Now, she had her answer.

But Louisa wasn't the type to believe hearsay or live in doubt. As they stepped out of the office building, she got straight to the point. "How is Letitia?"

Elijah didn't look surprised. "He told you, then?"

Louisa stopped walking as a biting spring wind swept past. "I want to hear it from you."

The wind caught her hair and tugged at her silk scarf. After she had ripped it away in front of Thaddeus, she had only tied it back loosely, losing the elegant knot she had earlier.

Elijah reached out for her scarf. Louisa didn't flinch. When Thaddeus had tried to touch her, she had recoiled because he no longer had the right. But Elijah was different. He was her husband, even if only on paper.

Elijah adjusted her scarf and tied it into a perfect bow.

"You can see for yourself how she's doing."

Louisa was stunned. She hadn't expected him to admit it so readily, let alone offer her a chance to see Letitia. For seven years, the woman had been a ghost, erased from the world.

"You mean... I can actually visit her?" she asked, her voice wavering.

The incident with Letitia had left a scar on her life. Only Louisa knew how deep it ran. She could even say that the scar was still bleeding.

Elijah checked his watch again. "There's a flight leaving in two hours."
