Separate Weddings, Separate Lives novel Chapter 53

"Good morning, darling."

When Thaddeus opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was Danica sitting by the window, dressed in a black silk slip dress, a coffee cup in hand.

Beneath the sheets, his body was bare. He immediately knew what had happened.

The night was a blur, but not without fragments of memory. He closed his eyes again, refusing to look at her.

Danica wasn't surprised by Thaddeus' reaction. "Darling, let's go out for a walk. Look how much fun Ms. Graham and the others are having."

She turned her phone to show him a video she'd just found online. If she couldn't get Thaddeus' attention, someone else surely could.

It worked. Thaddeus opened his eyes and glanced at the screen.

It was a clip of Louisa dancing, of Elijah carrying her, and the two of them driving an oversized car like carefree kids. The video was beautifully shot and edited, as though it were a scene from a movie.

Thaddeus felt bitter. He threw off the blanket and ducked into the bathroom. Moments later, Danica heard him retching—she couldn't tell if he was throwing up bitterness, jealousy, or both.

Regardless, Thaddeus still showed up later in front of Elijah and Louisa. To hide whatever marks the night had left on him, he wore a hat and sunglasses, dressed down in simple casual clothes.

Danica, now in sporty attire, walked beside him. Together, they looked like a wonderful, compatible couple.

"Your shadow is back," Elijah remarked. He and Louisa were lounging on a vast green lawn, the endless stretch of grass almost like a prairie.

"Don't you mean yours?" Louisa countered. The sun was shining brightly, and she slid on a pair of sunglasses. The frames complemented her cool, detached presence, making her seem sultry and fiercely untamed.

Elijah reclined further, his legs crossed at the ankles. "True. After all, even you belong to me."
