Separate Weddings, Separate Lives novel Chapter 54

Elijah's words made Thaddeus recall the phone call last night.

"Elijah, let's negotiate. What is it going to take for you to let Louisa go?"

Thaddeus sat in the chair Louisa had just vacated. He could still feel the faint, lingering warmth of her body against the fabric. At this moment, that was enough to bring him immense satisfaction.

Elijah pressed a button beside the chair, and the sunshade slid into place. He remained hidden in the shadows, his glasses still on. "Mr. Cromwell, are you still drunk from last night? Or are you sleepwalking?"

Thaddeus ignored the mockery and proposed his offer. "Elijah, I can let you have Mount Horsher if you want."

Mount Horsher was a prime piece of land in the city's new district. After months of bidding and elimination, only Thaddeus and Elijah had remained.

Thaddeus still remembered the day of the bidding clearly. Louisa was present, too, and Elijah had said to him, "Mr. Cromwell, why don't you give up your love?"

He realized then that Elijah's "love" had never meant Mount Horsher alone. He had referred to Louisa, too.

Elijah had married Louisa with an ulterior motive, but there was no denying he had developed a genuine interest in her. Thaddeus, as a man himself, could see it plainly. However, when did Elijah fall for Louisa?

"Free of charge?" Elijah asked in a sluggish voice that suggested he was sleepy. It was barely past 10:00 am, the hour when most people were at their sharpest—unless they didn't have a restful night.

Thaddeus couldn't help but recall Louisa's breathy voice on the phone last night. His jaws tightened as he replied, "That's possible."

If it meant getting Louisa back, there was no price too high.

"Mr. Cromwell, you must be deeply devoted to my wife if you're willing to give up a plot of land worth millions of dollars." Elijah shifted his weight to find a more comfortable spot.
