Separate Weddings, Separate Lives novel Chapter 56

Why did everyone seem to know who Louisa was searching for?

The Holten family's decision to flaunt her credentials had apparently caused the world to dig up her past. But what, exactly, was Danica, this wolf in sheep's clothing, after?

Louisa kept walking, refusing to take the bait. She knew if she stayed silent, Danica would eventually crack.

Danica hadn't anticipated Louisa to just walk away.

Determined to win Thaddeus back after returning from abroad, she had thoroughly looked into Louisa's background. She admitted that Louisa was competent in her work, but she hadn't expected such cold arrogance. After all, Louisa was an orphan. What gave her the right to act so haughtily?

After spending the past few days with Louisa, Danica had to acknowledge that even though Louisa fell short of her in every way, she never once appeared insecure or overbearing. It was as though nothing could shake her. The realization left Danica deeply frustrated.

And now Louisa had her husband, Elijah, firmly standing behind her. The thought that a man of his stature—a titan at the apex of the social pyramid—had fallen for someone like Louisa made Danica's blood boil with envy.

Before the Watson family returned to the country, they had assessed the domestic landscape. Patrick's first choice had been Elijah. However, after Danica conducted her investigation, she wasn't confident of getting close to him. In the end, she had settled for Thaddeus. At least they were past lovers.

Who would have imagined that Louisa would be the one to benefit in the end?

Glowering at Louisa's retreating back, Danica stomped on the grass before rushing to catch up. "Stop trying to play hard to get, Louisa. Elijah isn't going to let you see her."

"Did he say that to you?" Louisa mocked.

From the moment they landed at the airport all the way to now, Louisa had witnessed Danica try to strike up a conversation with Elijah, only to be met with total silence.

Stung by the reminder, Danica forced herself to endure the humiliation. "Don't be stubborn, Louisa. I'm being serious here. I'm trying to help you."

Although she sounded remarkably sincere, Louisa remained aloof. "Why would you help me?"

Louisa immediately called out Danica's intentions. "I'm proud of being able to read people. Your offer of friendship has a hidden agenda."

Danica replied stubbornly, "And what exactly do you have that would be worth the effort?"

"Only you'd know," Louisa replied coolly, their gazes locking behind her sunglasses in a silent clash of wills.

In the end, Danica had no choice but to back down. "You'll have to beg for my help someday, Louisa."

With that, she turned to leave. However, her ankle twisted slightly as she nearly lost her footing.

Finally, peace returned. Louisa looked up at the sky before taking in the grass and river stretching out before her. She couldn't help pulling out her phone and snapping a photo. However, she didn't post it on Instagram. Instead, she changed her Facebook profile picture.

Shortly after, she received a Facebook notification from her friend. "Sadena?"
