In the end, Louisa didn't manage to fool Elijah with her lie. Since she couldn't deceive him, she stopped trying.
Louisa put her phone away with an air of composure, though she felt it vibrate again. Someone had sent another message, but she couldn't afford to look at it now.
Louisa drove them back, while Elijah lounged like a king in the passenger seat, legs casually crossed. His long arm draped over the back of her seat, looking calm and effortless.
"Why didn't you say yes to her?" Elijah asked.
Louisa knew he was referring to Danica's offer to take her to the person she was looking for. "I don't trust her," she replied.
Elijah's fingers became entangled in her long hair. The strands felt like silk as he wound a lock of it around his fingertip. "Is there anyone you do trust?"
The question hit home. She had once placed her faith in Thaddeus, but he had destroyed the last bit of that trust.
Her silence said everything. Then, without warning, Elijah placed his hand on the steering wheel and leaned close. "Trust your husband from now on."
Louisa dismissed his words as a mere joke. She drove the rest of the way in silence, and by the time they arrived, Danica and Thaddeus were gone.
Out of sight, out of mind. It was a relief they weren't there.
"I'm tired."
Louisa didn't want to stay put. As stunning as the place was, it felt fleeting. Moreover, she felt a nagging sense of unease in her chest. The person she was chatting with knew she was here, and it would be a disaster if he came looking for her.
Louisa felt more certain than ever that cutting ties was the right move. After all, the best way to live is to embrace simplicity and the art of letting go. The fewer possessions one had, the lighter the heart, and she realized human relationships were no different. Fewer people meant fewer complications.
Suddenly, Elijah held Louisa's hand, their fingers interlocked. Louisa frowned slightly at the sudden intimacy. There was no need to keep up with the pretense since no one was around.
"Don't children need to be held and guided when they're tired?" Elijah's words caught Louisa off guard.
