Louisa switched on her phone and saw three new Facebook messages.
"I'm sorry. Please ignore what I said earlier."
"I didn't mean any harm. I just thought it was such a stroke of luck, finding ourselves in the same foreign land."
"Are you here for pleasure, or business?"
His Facebook name was "When I Was Twelve". To this day, neither knew the other's real name. She called him "Twelve", and he called her "Candy" because of her Facebook name, "Candy Isn't Sweet".
She scrolled back through their chat history, but only today's messages remained. She cleared her phone regularly, leaving no digital footprint behind. It was that very habit, however, that had led her to accidentally send the message to Elijah.
Louisa's temples throbbed in pain as she thought about Elijah. He was like a leopard who had set the trap, and it was only a matter of time before he closed in for the kill. She refused to be the sacrificial lamb—she had to find a way to manage him.
"Twelve, I won't be using Facebook anymore."
Louisa stared at the drafted message for two seconds before hitting send.
In this day and age, most people had abandoned Facebook and moved on to more sophisticated platforms. She hoped Twelve would understand her intention.
The screen showed that Twelve was typing a reply, as if he had been waiting for her to respond. "Candy, I know I overstepped. I broke our rules for the meetup. It won't happen again."
Before Louisa could finish reading the message, Twelve added, "I promise."
She knew that he didn't want to give up on their ties, but her mind was made up. "All good things must come to an end. Thank you for the companionship all these years."
After sending the message, Louisa deleted the app immediately from her phone.
She later fell asleep and dreamed of Letitia. Oddly enough, she also dreamed that Twelve had come looking for her, insisting on a face-to-face meeting. She stepped closer, only to be jolted awake by a sudden itch at her nose before she could see his face.
True to his word, Elijah brought Louisa out. However, she stayed silent, and Elijah was uncharacteristically quiet as they drove. They sat in the car and enjoyed Sadena's night scene.
The car eventually came to a halt before the tallest building in Sadena. The rooftop restaurant was legendary, rumored to be among the top ten in the world.
If Elijah was taking Louisa to meet someone, that person was clearly no ordinary figure. Louisa glanced at the luxurious building before her and frowned slightly.
"Don't look so miserable. Others might think I'm bullying you." Before stepping out of the car, Elijah reached over and hooked a finger into the corner of her mouth. He was back to treating her like a child, resorting to childish antics.
"Elijah Holten," Louisa said.
"Why aren't you calling me Mr. Holten?"
Ignoring his teasing, she said solemnly, "You know what our relationship is. I have no interest in being part of your social circle."
