Separate Weddings, Separate Lives novel Chapter 67

Elijah had been sitting outside, but he knew everything about what went down inside the room. That meant Louisa was being watched. It was probably because he didn't trust her and was afraid she'd hurt Letitia.

Of course, Elijah was unbothered by owning up to what he did. Louisa didn't take it personally. After all, she'd known why he'd married her for a while now.

"I talked to her about a secret between us." Louisa might as well have not answered him.

Elijah's eyes glinted briefly with mirth. She'd become more mischievous and more willing to let herself go with him.

"It looks like your little secret worked well," Elijah commented smugly.

The fact that Louisa hadn't given him a straight answer meant she didn't intend to provide an explanation at all. It didn't matter how much he was dying to know.

She asked him outright, "So, have you agreed to let me stay, Mr. Holten?"

Although Elijah's aim was clear, Louisa couldn't say for sure that he'd allow her to stay. Elijah was extremely cunning, and his mind worked in interesting ways. He did things on a whim, following his heart.

"Didn't you say you were going back tomorrow?" Elijah sidestepped her question and used her own words against her.

What Louisa had said about going back was only an attempt to test him. She hadn't even booked tickets, and there was no way he didn't know that. He could read her like a book, let alone whether or not she'd booked flight tickets.

Elijah had asked that question on purpose. In response to his verbal tricks, Louisa just said plainly, "I'd go back if there was nothing to do, but things have changed now."

Louisa had come for Letitia. She intended to leave because she couldn't see her, but now that they had met, of course, Louisa wanted to stay.

Elijah said nothing, simply studying her. Under his gaze, Louisa felt as though she was going to burn from its intensity. Perhaps it was because of the bright lights.

Sweat trickled down Louisa's back. "Why are you looking at me like that, Mr. Holten? Do you still suspect me of harboring ulterior motives?"
