Louisa was taken aback. She hadn't expected Elijah to twist her reason for wanting to stay. Was he paranoid?
It didn't look like he was kidding. She suddenly remembered what he'd said on the field, pressed up against her. She suddenly understood where his sense of suspicion originated from.
People said women were sensitive, but this man's sensitivity truly surpassed that of any woman she knew.
Louisa didn't lose her composure. She put her slender arms around his neck and drew him downward. "Don't worry, Mr. Holten. Before you end things, I won't do anything to hurt you."
Her hands were soft, and so were her words. Elijah's dissatisfaction melted away. He pressed his lips against the mole on her ear.
"Good girl!" That meant she'd manage to appease him. She'd be able to stay.
Louisa withdrew her arms while Elijah straightened up. "I'm leaving."
His silence on the matter meant that he'd let her remain there, but that didn't mean she would stay in the house. This place belonged to Letitia.
The driver fetched them home. Both were silent throughout. However, unlike the journey there, Elijah didn't sleep. He stayed on his phone, seemingly texting someone.
Louisa knew what was expected of her. She looked out the window.
As they were about to arrive at their place, Elijah asked, "Are you on Facebook a lot?"
Louisa gulped. "Not at all."
She waited for him to continue the conversation, but he said nothing. Louisa couldn't help but glance at him out of the corner of her eye. He was using Facebook to text someone.
Averting her eyes, Louisa commented, "I wasn't expecting you to like using this app."
"I'm a sentimental, faithful man." Way to praise himself. It was also a quip at her.
Unbothered, Louisa agreed, "I can tell."
Elijah's fingers paused. He looked up at Louisa, who was still looking resolutely away. He smirked and asked, "What else can you tell?"
