Nelson, Bernice, and Jerome arrived just as Lizetta finished her meal.
Both Nelson and Bernice were dressed in solemn, respectful black for the occasion.
Lizetta stepped out of the car. Remington was already outside, opening the trunk and retrieving two bouquets of flowers.
"Let's go."
The man nodded at her. Lizetta glanced at the flowers in his hands, her eyes widening in mild surprise.
Remington simply offered her a reassuring smile.
As the two of them walked toward her family, Lizetta carefully watched her grandfather's expression.
"Grandpa."
She had been worried Nelson would be furious and scold them, but the older man simply gave her a brief glance before turning his attention to Remington.
He noticed the two bouquets in Remington's hands. Instead of the standard white chrysanthemums usually used for mourning, he had brought two stunning arrangements of spray roses.
Nelson's gaze flickered, and his stern expression softened just a fraction.
"That was thoughtful of you."
While spray roses weren't exceptionally rare, Remington had specifically chosen Avocado Spray Roses.
It had been Elsa Madden's absolute favorite flower when she was alive.
It proved that Remington had done his homework before coming; he was showing genuine respect and sincerity.
"It's the least I could do."
Even upon receiving the rare compliment from Nelson, Remington maintained his humble demeanor.
He reached out, instinctively trying to support the older man, but Nelson smoothly sidestepped him, waving him off as he walked past.
Jerome quickly stepped up to accompany him. Given Nelson's age, the steep paths of the cemetery required a watchful eye.
Lizetta linked arms with Bernice, leaving Remington to naturally fall into step at the back of the group.
His attention remained firmly fixed on the two women ahead of him. As Nelson paused to catch his breath, he turned just in time to see Bernice's foot slip slightly on the pavement.
"Grandpa, Grandma, wait here for a moment. We'll go check it out."
Lizetta prepared to step forward, with Jerome and Remington flanking her.
She was worried her grandfather wouldn't want to see someone so repulsive, but Nelson raised a hand, his voice heavy with authority.
"No need. We'll all go together."
Seeing his resolve, Lizetta didn't argue. She simply tightened her grip on her grandmother's hand.
The sound of their approaching footsteps finally alerted the man by the grave.
He had been slouched against the stone, his head bowed in a picture of utter devastation.
As he turned to look at them, a few strands of messy hair fell across his forehead. He looked exceptionally haggard and heartbroken, a noticeable dampness clinging to the corners of his eyes.
It was, of course, Conrad West.
Seeing Lizetta and the rest of the Madden family, a flash of genuine shock crossed his pale face. It was quickly replaced by embarrassment as he rapidly turned away to wipe his eyes before using the ground to push himself to his feet.

Does evil really triumph always above the good in this novel ? How comes Stella's evilness has no end? Does the author believes that by giving justice and importance to bad people like Stella will make this novel interesring? I am starting to lose my patience and ask when will the writer finally will realize that the protagonist is Lizetta and not Stella....
