"Alright, whatever you say."
Melanie caved surprisingly fast. The garden snake she had encountered wasn't venomous, but she knew there was always a risk of infection. Preston's insistence that they visit the clinic for a tetanus shot was perfectly reasonable.
She glanced down at her ankle. The puncture wounds were tiny, barely noticeable, yet Preston had meticulously cleaned the area before gently applying a bandage. Feeling the sheer weight of his care and devotion, a sweet, knowing smile touched her lips.
Naturally, that radiant expression didn't escape Preston's notice.
"What are you smiling about?" he murmured, his voice a low rumble.
Melanie snapped out of her daze, quickly masking her amusement. She shook her head. "Nothing! I wasn't smiling."
Seeing her stubborn denial, Preston didn't push it. He let the matter drop, and the two of them walked out of the bedroom and headed downstairs.
In the living room, Everett and Daphne were sitting on the couch, both mindlessly scrolling through their phones. Melanie immediately noticed that there was at least three feet of empty space between them.
She tilted her head, a soft frown forming. Had they gotten into a fight? That didn't make sense. If things were fine, Daphne would have been glued to his side, her arm wrapped affectionately around his. Right now, they looked like two strangers caught in the middle of a cold war.
Instinctively, Melanie exchanged a glance with Preston. He gave her a subtle nod, silently urging her to break the suffocating silence in the room.
Melanie cleared her throat loudly.
It was only then that Daphne snapped out of her trance, realizing her friend had come downstairs. "Melanie! How is the bite? Is it bad?"
Melanie shook her head. "It's fine. But... just to be safe, I need to go get a tetanus shot."
