“Melanie…”
Dominic lowered his gaze, guiltily avoiding Evelyn’s expectant eyes.
“Just let her stay on as project manager for now.”
“What?”
Evelyn was dumbfounded. She shoved Dominic away.
“Evelyn…”
“If you care about her so much, why don’t you go ask her to keep you company!”
“I never said I cared about her.”
“You don’t care about her, yet you can’t even bring yourself to fire her.”
Ignoring Dominic’s protests, Evelyn stormed out of his office, slamming the door behind her.
Outside the office, a few employees sensed the tension but dared not say anything, merely whispering among themselves.
Dominic slumped into his chair like a deflated balloon.
He knew he owed Evelyn. He was in her debt.
But his marriage to Melanie wasn’t just about the two of them.
It was about their two families.
The Hale family and the Royce family were old family friends. For generations, their fortunes had been intertwined; they rose and fell together.
Evelyn had understood this perfectly back then. When he had decided to marry Melanie, Evelyn had been supportive.
To this day, Dominic still remembered Evelyn crying as she told him:
“Dominic, I won’t stand in the way of your future, and I certainly won’t interfere with the Hale family’s business… Go ahead and marry Melanie! I’ll marry Everett…”
“You know me… I’ve never cared about what society thinks or about having a title… All I want is for you to love me.”
Closing his eyes, Dominic rubbed his aching temples as he drifted back into the past.
He loved Evelyn.
Even now, he still loved her with his entire heart.
He was the kind of person who, once he made up his mind, never wavered.
Back when he was on the brink of death, he had heard Evelyn’s voice before he ever saw her face.
He had fallen in love with her in that very moment.
“I do, but what’s this about? Don't tell me you're changing careers, boss! Please don’t! The entire industry would lose its mind if you quit! You're the only one keeping the bar high!”
Melanie rubbed her forehead, embarrassed. She couldn’t understand how a grown man, a renowned figure in the world of pharmacology, could be so dramatic.
“Me, save the world? What, are we in the middle of a zombie apocalypse?” Melanie joked, remembering an animated show she had seen recently.
After a bit of banter, Melanie got to the point.
“I need you to help me look into… the financial status of the Novarison Pharmaceuticals Plant.”
An hour later.
Melanie finished her call with Elias and stepped out of the master bedroom.
The lights were on in the living room, but no one was home.
Ever since she and Preston had parted ways at the bridge, she hadn’t seen him at all for several days.
And they lived in the same house.
Yet, whether she came home from work on time or late, Preston was nowhere to be seen.
At first, Melanie didn’t think anything of it.
