Sam reached for her arm again, trying to pull her inside the motel.
Daphne violently ripped herself away from his grip.
She knew he probably didn't intend to be insulting, but his words made her stomach turn.
"I might not be a virgin, but I'm not easy either. I really think we need to date for a while before we talk about this."
Seeing her stern expression, Sam's mouth fell open.
"Are you... actually mad?"
Daphne remained silent.
"Alright, alright, forget I said anything. I'm just eager because I'm crazy about you. I like you, so I want you."
He flashed her a bright, toothy grin.
"Come on, let's go grab some food."
He took her hand again, and this time, she didn't pull away.
She genuinely thought her rejection would trigger a temper tantrum.
Surprisingly, he wasn't angry at all. He respected her boundary and led her entirely out of the motel district.
Since winter had already set in, the outdoor night markets were closed.
Sam eventually found a small, local Mexican joint, and they shared a plate of spicy tacos.
Daphne couldn't help but feel that Sam might actually be genuine.
This time, she had chosen someone who was crazy about her.
Maybe this time, she wouldn't end up shattered.
Still, an unshakable sense of unease lingered in her chest. She couldn't tell if the tacos were just notoriously bad or if her anxiety was making everything taste like cardboard.
After dinner, Sam drove her back to the Eclipse Noir Club.
Everett was no longer waiting by the door.
Daphne let out a quiet sigh of relief.
Sam parked the car, hopped out, and opened her door, just like before.
