Evelyn and Lila were currently living in the house Melanie and Dominic had shared since their marriage.
Lila had fallen asleep in the car, and Dominic carried her upstairs, placing her on the bed in the master bedroom.
Since Evelyn and Lila had moved in, Dominic had given them the master bedroom.
Now, with the child out of the way, he and Evelyn could have some time to themselves.
Dominic pulled Evelyn into the living room, but she pushed him away.
“Don’t touch me.”
Dominic was bewildered.
“What’s wrong with you?”
“You’re asking me what’s wrong?”
Evelyn’s eyes turned red.
“Dominic, how did I never realize what a scumbag you are! You were the one who said our feelings weren't just platonic, that you loved me, and you convinced me to have your child. But four years have passed, and Lila and I still have no official status. Not only won't you divorce Melanie, but you’re starting to take her side more and more.”
“When have I ever taken her side?”
“And you still deny it!”
Evelyn was on the verge of tears.
“Didn’t you take back the bracelet you gave me because of her?”
He fell silent.
“Didn’t you go back on your promise to give me the director position because of her?”
He remained silent.
“Do you regret not touching her for four years? Are you thinking about having a child with her now?!”
Hit with Evelyn’s barrage of questions, Dominic felt his head splitting.
“What are you talking about?!”
He pulled her into a tight embrace.
“I had no choice before! I was doing it for the company, for business, for our future together with Lila!”
Dominic’s voice was full of conviction.
“Evelyn, from the moment you saved my life, I, Dominic, swore I would only ever love you…”
Hearing that, Daphne realized that Melanie was, in effect, homeless now.
She immediately slapped her own mouth a couple of times.
“My mistake. From now on, my club is your home. You can do your homework or solve equations here, whatever you want. I’ll even be your biggest fan if you decide to give a lecture.”
Melanie laughed at Daphne’s dramatic statement.
Of course, she wasn't doing homework.
She was writing out the formulas for a new drug.
When Daphne got a call from Melanie saying she was coming to the club, she thought Melanie was trying to make up for the night of indulgence she’d missed.
She had even prepared the male hosts. But as soon as Melanie arrived, she pulled out a pen and paper and started writing and calculating. The two hosts stood by, staring at each other awkwardly, feeling more and more like they were in the way.
A nightclub certainly wasn’t the ideal place for calculations, but Melanie liked the atmosphere of Daphne’s club. The music and the scent of alcohol actually helped her work more efficiently.
She had already bought a lab, but the renovations and equipment delivery would take time.
Just as Melanie put down her pen, her phone vibrated.
It was a text message.
