Dominic’s intention was to reason with Lila.
But the more he tried, the harder Lila cried.
“Evelyn, come over here and talk to Lila.”
Frustrated by Lila’s crying, Dominic handed the phone to Evelyn.
Evelyn didn’t take it.
Dominic’s expression immediately changed, and he put the phone on speaker.
“Lila, your mom wants to talk to you.”
Even after hearing Dominic say this, Evelyn remained silent.
Dominic was growing impatient.
Just then, Melanie’s calm voice came through the speakerphone, “Don’t blame Lila. I’m the one who told her she could call you that.”
“What?”
Dominic was shocked.
Evelyn’s eyes widened as well.
“When Lila and I were having dinner, she told me about a child at her kindergarten whose parents are divorced and who doesn’t have a father. She was very sad and said she wanted a father, so I told her she could call her uncle ‘Dad’…”
“She’s still little, after all. There’s no harm in it. As long as Lila is happy, that's what matters. A child’s mental health is the most important thing.”
After hearing Melanie’s explanation, Dominic was so moved his eyes welled up.
He never would have imagined that Melanie could be so considerate of Lila’s feelings.
Lila was incredibly moved as well.
Her mommy had said her aunt was a bad person, but now she felt that her aunt was the only one who was truly nice to her.
The only person with reservations was Evelyn.
What was Melanie doing?
Evelyn remained silent, lost in thought.
She had used Lila to cause trouble for Melanie several times before. There was no way Melanie didn’t hold a grudge. So why would she treat Lila to dinner and even allow her to call Dominic ‘Dad’?
Evelyn racked her brain but couldn’t come up with an answer.
