“Why aren’t you going into the kindergarten?” Melanie asked softly, approaching the little girl.
The little girl looked up at Melanie.
The sight gave Melanie a start.
The girl's face was a swollen mess, her cheeks red and puffy. It was obvious she had been hit.
Melanie recognized her after a moment. It was Elina, the little girl she had seen at the kindergarten gate when she picked up Lila before.
While driving, she had noticed a little girl squatting by the side of the road and, worried she might be unwell, had pulled over out of curiosity.
She never expected it to be Elina, the girl who was often bullied by Lila at the kindergarten.
Recalling the hysterical state of Elina's mother from before, Melanie guessed that the marks on Elina's face were most likely from her own mother.
She wouldn’t meddle in other people's family matters.
But the healer in her couldn't just walk away.
Melanie had always considered herself to have a strong medical background.
“Your teacher and classmates will be worried if you don’t go in.”
“Where’s your mom?”
“Why are you crying all alone out here?”
Melanie wouldn't ask any of these questions.
She could guess the answers, and asking would only add to the little girl’s stress and sadness.
“Excuse me, little one, is this Sunnybrook Kindergarten?”
Elina looked at Melanie timidly and gave a quick, jerky nod. “Mm-hmm…”
Melanie smiled gently. “Well, thank you for helping me with the directions. As a thank you, this is for you.”
Melanie took a small, flat, round container from her handbag.
“What… is this…”
