It was daytime in Jastoria.
Preston was in a meeting. He saw the text from Gabriel but didn’t reply.
Forty minutes earlier, just as the meeting was about to start, he had received another text from Gabriel: [CODE RED! Bro, some guy is trying to make a move on our girl!]
When Preston saw that message, he had been a split second away from turning off his phone.
Fortunately, before he did, he saw the image Gabriel had sent. It was a photo of Melanie, Bryant, and Elina sitting at a table together.
Preston’s expression changed instantly. A moment later, Gabriel sent him a short video. In it, Melanie was smiling as she accepted the flowers from Bryant. Ninety-nine pink roses, each one looking like a thorn in Preston’s eyes.
Preston could guess why Melanie was having dinner with Bryant and Elina. The new anti-cancer drug she was in charge of had captured sixty percent of the market share right after its launch, forcing the two biggest competitors in the field into bankruptcy and acquisition by the Carter Group. Such an outstanding achievement was certainly worth celebrating.
However… Preston hadn’t asked Melanie out to celebrate. He knew, deep down, that for Melanie, the time wasn’t right.
But… staring at the video Gabriel sent, Preston's expression hardened, a stormy shadow crossing his eyes.
The change in his expression terrified the other company executives who were about to start the meeting with him. They all began whispering among themselves, their hearts pounding with uncertainty.
