A flicker of unease crossed Evelyn’s face.
Just as she was about to speak, Dominic cut in.
“I lent it to her… It’s Lila’s first day of her new program, after all. Brightwood Premier Academy is a prestigious school, and Evelyn didn’t have any decent clothes. I was afraid she’d be looked down on if she wasn’t dressed well, so I took the liberty of lending her your limited-edition suit.”
“I’m sorry. I should have told you first.”
Dominic tried to take Melanie’s hand to comfort her, but she moved it away.
However, she was reaching for some fruit, so he told himself she might not have been intentionally avoiding his touch.
“I’m sorry, Melanie. Even if it was my brother’s idea, I shouldn’t have worn your clothes, especially such an expensive limited-edition piece…”
“It’s fine.”
Melanie smiled magnanimously.
“Consider the suit a gift.”
Evelyn was stunned.
Dominic was just as surprised.
“Melanie…”
“Didn’t Dad just say I failed to get Lila a gift for starting her program? It’s too late to prepare one now, so just take the suit as a gift. It doesn’t matter if it goes to Lila or Evelyn.”
After speaking, Melanie lowered her head and ate with gusto, not looking like she was being sarcastic at all.
“Now that’s more like it. That’s how a proper sister-in-law should act,” Nathaniel chimed in from the side.
Originally, Dominic hadn’t wanted Evelyn to accept it.
That suit was his anniversary gift to Melanie.
Its significance was more important than its price.
Yet, Melanie had given it away so easily.
“Melanie, maybe… we could give Evelyn something else…”
“No, the suit is perfect. I can see Evelyn likes it, and I’ve already made the offer. It wouldn’t be right to take it back. Besides, didn’t Dad just praise me for doing the right thing?”
Melanie grinned at Dominic.
Dominic couldn’t bring himself to smile back.
He felt that ever since Evelyn and Lila had moved in, Melanie had been acting strangely.
She was suddenly invested in the company’s business, and now she was nonchalantly giving her things away.
And staying out all night…
“By the way, Melanie, you haven’t come home for several nights in a row. Are you planning on staying out again tonight?”
Dominic brought it up as if it were a casual thought.
Melanie’s hand paused as she was cutting her meat.
“What? You haven’t been home for several nights?”
Seeing Nathaniel’s expression darken, Dominic quickly explained, “Dad, Melanie secured a huge client for my new company. She’s probably been busy with work…”
Dominic’s tone wasn’t very confident, and Nathaniel’s expression didn’t improve.
“As the saying goes, there are too many cooks in the kitchen. It’s normal for Lila to be uncomfortable with a woman other than her mother living in her home and calling the shots.”
“Now that Lila is starting her school program, she needs a comfortable environment. My presence makes her uneasy. It’s better to let Evelyn and Dominic be there with her. I can stay at a hotel near the office, which also makes it convenient for me to handle work matters anytime. It’s a win-win.”
At first glance, Melanie’s explanation seemed reasonable, leaving Nathaniel speechless.
Dominic, however, was panicking. He felt as if Melanie was preparing to separate from him.
“Melanie, you are the only mistress of this house. Evelyn and Lila are just staying with us temporarily.”
Evelyn shot Dominic a resentful look, and Lila lowered her head in disappointment.
Melanie smiled.
“But our households are registered at the same address. I could just move my registration out…”
“Nonsense!”
Nathaniel slammed his hand on the table in anger.
The entire revolving restaurant fell silent.
Melanie was now certain that without concrete evidence, her father would never agree to her divorcing Dominic.
Silence hung over the table.
Melanie was the first to speak, her tone light.
“I’m just trying to be considerate of my husband and my niece.”
With that, she resumed eating.
