She knew it. A dinner invitation from her father never meant anything good.
When Melanie walked over, Dominic stood up proactively, pulling out her chair with a show of attentiveness.
“Melanie, today is Lila’s first day of the pre-K transition program at her new school. I thought we should all go out and celebrate, so I called Dad.”
“Then why not call me first? Were you afraid I wouldn’t come?”
Melanie asked with a smile, watching Dominic’s face grow visibly uncomfortable.
“...Dad’s our elder. Of course, I had to call him first.”
“Right. You have a point.”
Melanie sat down and added casually, “You know, your little family of three could have just celebrated on your own. You didn’t need to include me.”
At these words, Nathaniel instinctively glanced at Dominic.
Dominic’s face went pale.
“What are you talking about, Melanie? We’re the married couple here.”
“Oh, that’s right. I’ve been so busy with projects at work lately, I almost forgot.”
Melanie tapped her head lightly.
“How could you forget something like that? Evelyn is Dominic’s sister. Since you’ve married into the Hale family, you’re naturally family with Evelyn and Lila. It’s only right to celebrate Lila starting her program. As her aunt, not only did you not prepare a gift, but you fought with a child over a hair accessory. Dominic told me everything. You don’t act like an aunt at all.”
Scolded by Nathaniel, Melanie’s smile vanished as she shot a look at Dominic.
Dominic silently sipped his water, not daring to meet her gaze.
“Here, Lila. This is a school gift to you.”
Nathaniel placed an exquisite gift box into Lila’s small hands.
“What is it?”
Curious, Lila immediately tore off the wrapping. Inside the box was a cartoon hair clip encrusted with real diamonds.
