The spacious room fell silent, leaving only Melanie and the heavily sedated Everett, who lay fast asleep on the bed.
Even under the effects of the tranquilizer, his brow was tightly furrowed.
Melanie could feel it...
The sheer panic echoing inside him.
The agonizing pain.
She sat down on the edge of the mattress.
There was no doubt about it, hearing "Evelyn" had triggered that violent episode.
It seemed her suspicions were correct. Evelyn was the one responsible for Everett being trafficked to an overseas black market compound and having his mind destroyed.
But, why?
He was her husband.
Even if the woman was dead set on marrying Dominic, there was no reason to destroy Everett like this.
Why not just ask for a divorce?
Melanie couldn't wrap her head around it.
She vaguely remembered that Everett had been the one to initiate the marriage.
He had arranged an extravagant proposal at The Velvet Orchid.
Melanie had been there.
She had watched him stand before her, offering up a stunning diamond ring and a massive bouquet of flowers to propose.
Evelyn had been moved to tears.
Melanie wasn't entirely sure how their romance had blossomed in the first place.
But during that proposal, at least to anyone watching, they looked completely and utterly in love.
That was exactly why she had never suspected Evelyn of harboring feelings for Dominic back then.
If...
If they had truly loved each other, how could Evelyn have been so utterly ruthless as to sell him off to an illicit syndicate?
Melanie trusted Everett's character.
He was a gentle, considerate, and entirely decent man. Even if his wife hadn't loved him and wanted Dominic instead, why go to such malicious extremes?
Melanie couldn't help but shake her head, letting out a heavy sigh.
When their eyes met, she froze in disbelief.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
She stood face-to-face with Dominic.
She hadn't seen him in a while and had actually been enjoying the hard-earned peace and quiet.
Now, staring at him in his sharp tailored suit, it was clear he had fully recovered from his injuries and been discharged from the hospital.
"Why shouldn't I be here?"
He glared at her, his expression twisting into something ugly and hostile.
"What, annoyed that I'm interrupting your cozy little domestic life with your new toy?"
He gritted his teeth, glancing over his shoulder at the upscale buildings of Rosevale Heights across the street.
"Living in a luxury complex like this... Does he even have the money, or are you the one paying his rent?"
Shoving one hand into his pocket, he let out a dark scoff.
"Melanie, don't think that just because you got that divorce certificate, we're suddenly done. Let me tell you right now, that piece of paper means absolutely nothing!"
