"Evelyn... effective today, you are demoted to Business Development Specialist."
As soon as Melanie said this, the office fell completely silent.
"On what grounds?"
The first person to stand up for Evelyn was Emilia.
Melanie glanced at her as if just noticing her presence, her eyes filled with disdain and indifference.
"On the grounds that I am Ms. Royce."
"You!"
Emilia almost bit her tongue.
But aside from glaring, there was nothing else she could say.
"Oh, and your position is changing as well..."
Melanie said casually, watching as Emilia's face turned pale with anxiety.
"Starting today, Emilia is off the executive floor and on janitorial duty."
"What?!"
Emilia's legs went weak, and she nearly collapsed to the floor.
The demotion was just too extreme.
A wave of shock went through the office, and everyone began to worry about their own positions.
Now that Melanie, the new boss, was cleaning house, everyone couldn't help but reflect on whether they had intentionally or unintentionally crossed her in the past.
Emilia stood to the side, completely stunned.
Evelyn, however, remained relatively calm. She crossed her arms, her face grim and silent.
But her hands, clenched into fists, were digging so tightly into her palms that it hurt.
Melanie had not discussed these personnel changes with anyone, neither Gregory nor Dominic.
Unsurprisingly, less than ten minutes after she made the announcement, Dominic's call came through.
"Evelyn falsified data, causing the company enormous losses and putting it in crisis. At any other company, she would have been fired and held legally responsible. I only demoted her to a specialist out of consideration for her being your sister. That's already incredibly lenient... If she faced no consequences for such a massive screw-up, that's what would truly destabilize morale."
"As for Emilia... a secretary who seduces the general manager? As Vice President of this company, I believe I have the authority to deal with that, don't you?"
"..."
Dominic was left speechless.
He couldn't believe Melanie had managed to counter him so effectively that he had nothing left to say.
Evelyn waited all morning.
She assumed that with Dominic backing her, her position would soon be restored, and she would continue as director.
However, the lunch break came and went, and no email about a revised job title arrived.
Unable to wait any longer, Evelyn called Dominic herself.
"Evelyn, Melanie has a point. You did make a huge mistake, after all. You don't want people accusing me of nepotism, do you?"
"Dominic, the way you're defending Melanie... have you fallen in love with her?"
