Dominic was taken aback on the other end of the line.
"What are you even talking about? Those are two completely different things."
But Evelyn couldn't be bothered to listen to Dominic's excuses.
"I'm telling you, Dominic, the biggest regret of my life is saving yours!"
With that, she hung up.
"Evelyn? Evelyn!"
Listening to the dial tone, Dominic was about to call back when another call came in.
It was Camilla.
"Sir, Miss Evelyn just called me and told me to pack her and Lila's things. She also insisted that I not tell you. I was worried something might happen, so I thought it was best to let you know..."
"Thank you, Camilla. Don't pack anything."
Dominic had the corporate office postpone his meeting and drove to the Hale Group to find Evelyn.
But Evelyn wasn't there.
He couldn't reach her on her cell, so he pushed open the door to Melanie's office.
Melanie was writing a project proposal and looked up at the sound.
Dominic stood before her, his expression thunderous.
"Melanie, can you please just let this go? No matter what, she's my sister... and your sister-in-law..."
Though he was furious, Dominic's tone held a hint of pleading.
He understood. Melanie was targeting Evelyn because she was jealous.
The old Melanie never meddled in his company's affairs or got involved in any projects.
Her newfound proactiveness was all because he had brought Evelyn back.
It was a woman's territorial instinct, a defense mechanism.
If Melanie didn't love him so deeply, she wouldn't be constantly at odds with Evelyn.
The thought that everything Melanie did stemmed from her intense love for him sparked a flicker of pity and affection in Dominic's heart.
"Lila's teacher called and said Evelyn wants to pull her out of school... Can you go to Brightwood Premier Academy and smooth things over with the teacher for now? Tell them we have no intention of withdrawing her."
Dominic expected Melanie to ask, "Then where are you going?"
"Of course. I'll go right now."
As Melanie stood up without asking any further questions, Dominic was suddenly struck by a realization...
Melanie was so much more mature and understanding than Evelyn.
"Thank you, I appreciate it. You can wait for me at the school. I'll be there as soon as I take care of something."
"Okay."
Melanie nodded with a smile.
She knew the "something" Dominic had to take care of was placating Evelyn.
She had originally wanted to go watch the show, but Dominic asking her to go to the school alone was even better.
She could make this little drama even more interesting.
