“Her daughter was caught red-handed stealing my jewelry.”
At Melanie’s words, Evelyn immediately retorted, “That’s impossible! Lila would never do something like that!”
“That’s right, Mommy! Aunt Melanie threw the jewelry on the floor herself! I-I don’t know anything… Aunt Melanie is so scary, I’m scared…”
The little girl started to cry again, her voice thick with feigned distress.
Faced with this pair of drama queens, Melanie let out a humorless laugh.
“I threw them? Dominic, take a good look at the jewelry on the floor… These are heirlooms my mother left me!”
As soon as Melanie said this, Lila’s crying instantly stopped.
Dominic glanced down at the floor, his expression turning ugly.
“You’re my husband. We’ve been married for four years. You can’t possibly be unaware of how much I cherish these heirlooms. And Lila is still wearing the diamond tiara that was my mother’s favorite… If you two are still going to lie, then let’s have the police investigate.”
With that, Melanie took out her phone, but Dominic clamped his hand down on it.
“It’s not a big deal, there’s no need to involve the police… Melanie, I’m sorry. I was wrong to blame you.”
His words were soft, but his grip was strong.
“Lila is still so young. Even if you call the police, they won’t do anything to her. Besides, she knows she was wrong now…”
As he spoke, Dominic gave Lila a look, and the little girl immediately whimpered an apology.
“I’m sorry, Aunt Melanie. I know I was wrong. I just thought the jewelry was pretty and shiny… I promise I’ll never play with it again. Please forgive me, okay?”
Seeing the situation, Evelyn chimed in, “That’s right, Melanie. Lila’s just a child, what does she know?”
“Right. She’s so young and already knows how to steal, how to twist the truth, and how to play the victim. It’s clear she learned those tricks right at her mother’s knee.”
“Alright, alright, let’s just drop it! Melanie, don’t keep dwelling on this little thing. We’re all going to be living under the same roof now, we need to learn to compromise and be considerate of each other…”
Dominic moved closer to Melanie and lowered his voice. “You are Evelyn’s sister-in-law, after all. Just do it for my sake, okay?”
Melanie shot him a look and took a large step away, creating distance between them.
“When you slapped me without even trying to find out what happened, were you doing it for my sake?”
“Melanie…”
Melanie then turned her gaze to Evelyn.
“When she replaced every piece of furniture and every appliance in this house, was she doing it for my sake?”
Evelyn immediately stood beside Dominic and explained with a fake smile, “Melanie, don’t misunderstand. It was my brother who said everything in the house was old after a few years and asked me to buy new things. If you don’t like them, I can buy new ones again.”
