She Left, She Thrived, She’s Worth Billions novel Chapter 62

Melanie paused.

She knew what Dominic was worried about.

But she wouldn’t mistake his concern for care or affection.

It was nothing more than a man’s bruised ego.

“I have to work late at the company tonight. Time is tight, so I’ll be pulling all-nighters for the next few days.”

Hearing this, Dominic let out a sigh of relief.

Though he wasn’t entirely convinced, Melanie had already made a bold claim. If the Hale Group was going to be saved, their only hope was her.

“You’re working so hard.”

No matter what, Melanie was putting in the effort for his company, and Dominic felt a sense of gratitude for that.

Evelyn watched silently from the side, her eyes burning with jealousy.

Ever since she had come to Averin, Dominic seemed to care more and more about Melanie with each passing day.

She took out her phone and sent Emilia a text.

Late at night.

Melanie returned to the Hale Group and worked for three hours straight.

Although Gabriel’s appearance tonight had helped her put the Hale family in their place, she didn’t know him well. Given his high status, she’d had to maintain a demure front during dinner and hadn’t eaten much. Now, her stomach was growling.

Picking up her phone, Melanie was about to order takeout when she saw a text from Preston.

[Preston: Still at the party?]

She had told Preston she had a dinner engagement but hadn't mentioned she wouldn't be coming home.

[Melanie: It ended a while ago. I’m at the office working late. I'm planning to pull an all-nighter, so I won't be back tonight.]

After sending that, Melanie added another message:

[I probably won't be home for the next few days.]

After sending the texts, she received no reply from Preston.

“Is he mad?”

Melanie felt a knot of uncertainty in her stomach.

After all, Preston had rented her a unit in the city’s best and most expensive building at a ridiculously low price on the condition that she share a portion of her home-cooked meals with him.

But since moving in, she hadn’t really held up her end of the bargain.

Melanie was a little worried Preston might get angry and kick her out.
