Expensive!
She could live with that.
The problem was—
The restaurant wasn’t in Averin.
It wasn’t even in Aldoria.
Melanie cleared her throat, put her phone down, and figured she would have to discuss this with Preston in person once her work was done.
At the very least, she needed to know—
If she was treating him to dinner, did that mean she had to pay for the plane tickets, too?
After pulling an all-nighter, Melanie couldn’t stay awake any longer and finally dozed off as dawn approached.
When she woke up, it was almost time for work to start.
She stepped out of her office to freshen up.
At that moment, the company was completely empty.
Emilia clocked in at her usual time, but she had arrived much earlier than normal.
She snuck into Melanie's office and, a short while later, crept back out, clutching her phone.

Meanwhile, Evelyn and Dominic were dropping Lila off at her new pre-kindergarten program.
Brightwood Premier Academy was definitely off the table.
The new school was a couple of tiers below Brightwood, to say the least. Lila was unhappy, but there was nothing to be done.
“Lila, you have to be on your best behavior at the new school, okay?” Dominic said earnestly, standing at the kindergarten gate.
“The way you say that makes it sound like it was Lila’s fault she got expelled before,” Evelyn said, rolling her eyes.
“That’s not what I meant…”
Dominic didn’t want to argue with Evelyn in front of Lila, especially not at the school gate.
Though young, Lila was quite perceptive.
She had noticed that her parents weren't getting along recently.
Her big, watery eyes welled up with tears. Lila pouted but didn’t say much, turning and walking into the school by herself.
Before, when she and her mom lived in Bresford, she couldn’t see her dad every day. But whenever he did visit, he would bring them gifts, and he and her mom got along so well. They never fought or gave each other the cold shoulder.
Lila had thought that once she and her mom moved to Averin to be with her dad every day, their relationship would be even better.
