Dominic Hale muttered under his breath, taking the worn photograph to a server at the cafe.
"Excuse me, do you happen to recognize the two people in this picture?"
The server blinked, flashing a polite but strained smile.
"I'm sorry, sir. That photo looks pretty old, and I only started working here last year."
His shoulders slumping in disappointment, Dominic proceeded to ask several more servers down the line.
Nobody had a clue where the picture came from.
Finally, one of them offered a suggestion.
"Why don't you ask the manager? She's been around the longest."
Dominic smacked his forehead.
Why hadn't he thought of that!
He tracked down the manager and presented the photograph again.
"I apologize, but this picture was already on the wall when I took over as manager," she explained.
The words hit Dominic like a physical blow. His hopes plummeted, leaving him utterly defeated.
"But... Mr. Fairchild might know."
"Mr. Fairchild?"
Dominic's head snapped up.
"Yes," the manager said with absolute certainty. "Mr. Fairchild used to be the manager of this cafe. Because of his outstanding performance, he got transferred to the hotel to be the lobby manager, and later stepped up as the administrative manager. He's a veteran employee around here."
A renewed spark of hope ignited in Dominic's eyes.
"Could you please help me find him?"
"Well..."
Seeing her hesitation, Dominic instinctively reached for his phone.
"I can compensate you for your time. I won't ask you to do it for free."
The words slipped out smoothly.
But regret followed a second later.
What if she demanded an exorbitant amount?
