Following the voice, an overwhelmingly oppressive, tall figure stepped up right beside Hulda, directly facing off against Herbert.
The blatant disdain written all over Caspian's face fiercely poked at Herbert's already fraying nerves.
"Hulda, what exactly is your relationship with him?"
Back at the resort, Caspian had mentioned his plus-one was a 'Ms. Atherton,' and Herbert had mistakenly assumed it was someone else entirely.
But during the press conference, Caspian had personally confirmed that his companion was, in fact, Hulda.
Yet Hulda was supposed to be the woman he had been married to for seven years!
Hulda shot Caspian an irritated glance. She was already annoyed enough without this man waltzing over to add fuel to the fire.
But mindful of the very public setting, she forced her temper down and replied coldly, "Mr. Jewell, whatever my relationship is with him, it is my private business. I absolutely do not owe you an explanation."
Private business?
Caspian raised an eyebrow, his beautifully carved lips curving into a very satisfied, wicked little smirk.
"Private business?" The muscles in Herbert's jaw ticked violently. "You and him? Private business? Hulda, don't forget that you are a married woman!"
Hulda froze for a second, her brows knitting together in genuine confusion. "Herbert, what on earth are you talking about? We're already div—"
"Ah! Ms. Sinclair!"
The bespectacled executive's sudden, panicked shout rudely cut off the rest of her sentence.
The man was frantically trying to hold up a completely limp Sylvie, looking at Herbert in utter horror. "Sir, Ms. Sinclair just fainted!"
Hearing this, Herbert whipped around. Seeing Sylvie's deathly pale face covered in cold sweat, his own face drained of color. "Sylvie!"
In that moment, everything else ceased to matter. He scooped the unconscious woman into his arms and sprinted desperately toward the exit of the banquet hall.
As he ran, he barked at his team over his shoulder, "Quick, go pull the car around!"
But after taking just a few strides, he abruptly slammed on the brakes. He turned back, casting one last, deeply conflicted look at Hulda. "Hulda, I'm taking Sylvie to the hospital. We are going to have a long talk later."
With that, he tightened his grip on Sylvie and sped out of the room.
Standing next to Caspian, Dylan watched Sylvie's violently trembling eyelids and leaned close to his boss, whispering, "Boss, that woman is definitely faking it."
"Right behind you!" Abby had been dying to escape for an hour. Hearing the order, she eagerly trotted after her boss.
Caspian was left standing there alone, like an abandoned toy, watching her walk away.
Seeing the faintly wounded expression on his boss's face, Dylan clicked his tongue sympathetically. "Boss, when is your relationship with Ms. Atherton actually going to improve?"
Today, his boss had moved mountains to secretly arrange for Dr. Atherton to make an appearance just to back her up. He had deflected the crowd for her, fended off unwanted attention, and handled all the socializing she hated.
And her response? She hadn't even given him a "goodbye."
Just as Dylan was wallowing in secondhand pity, he heard his boss's voice—cool, yet laced with a bizarrely gleeful undertone. "What do you know?"
Dylan blinked, utterly confused. He truly didn't understand. With Ms. Atherton treating him so coldly, what on earth was there to be happy about?
Caspian shot his clueless assistant a sideways glance, smirking without offering an explanation.
Right now, as far as Hulda was concerned, whatever was happening between the two of them was 'private business.'
Private business.
