She Quit Her Family and Found Herself novel Chapter 166

When Herbert walked through his front door, Callie was in the kitchen meticulously prepping the ingredients for dinner.

An enormous array of fresh ingredients covered the kitchen island, and she was patiently organizing them one by one.

"What are you making, Callie?" Herbert asked, walking over.

Hearing his voice, she immediately dropped what she was doing and hurried over with a warm smile. "Ms. Sinclair mentioned this morning that she really wanted to have that special soup from last time. I'm just getting everything prepped."

Herbert glanced at the mountain of ingredients completely monopolizing the counter, looking slightly surprised. "It's just a soup. Does it really require all of this?"

Callie chuckled. "Oh, definitely! And this is just the prep work. The actual cooking process is what takes forever."

Hearing this, a flash of genuine guilt crossed his face. "Thank you for all your hard work, Callie."

"Oh, please, it's nothing! It's my job," she replied, her eyes crinkling warmly. "You and Ms. Sinclair are the ones doing all the hard work. Especially Ms. Sinclair. I swear she's lost weight these past few days from overworking. She desperately needs something nourishing."

Thinking of Sylvie currently lying in a hospital bed on observation, Herbert nodded in agreement. "Yes, she really does need the nourishment. She actually fainted from low blood sugar today and is still at the hospital."

Callie gasped, instantly alarmed. "Oh my goodness! Is she okay? Do you need me to go to the hospital to take care of her?"

"She's fine, she woke up a while ago. Once the observation period is up, I'll go back and bring her home."

Callie breathed a slight sigh of relief, though her expression remained fraught with worry. "Well, that settles it. I'm adding two more highly nutritious side dishes to the menu tonight. Ms. Sinclair's body needs to recover."

Because of that background, she harbored a natural, protective sympathy for Sylvie, feeling a deep kinship with her as a fellow survivor.

Herbert didn't reply, but his eyes noticeably darkened.

Callie continued, completely oblivious. "But honestly, I think she's finally ready to make peace with you. She's just too proud to admit she's wrong, so she sent a gift as an olive branch. I saw the package—it's wrapped securely in multiple layers and practically demands your personal signature. It has to be something very expensive."

"Hulda is always playing these little games," Herbert muttered. His words sounded critical, but the slight, upward tilt at the end of his sentence betrayed his deep satisfaction.

Naturally, Callie didn't catch the nuance and eagerly agreed. "Exactly! That's the only real flaw Mrs. Jewell has."
