She Quit Her Family and Found Herself novel Chapter 170

Herbert stared at his own name stamped on the finalized decree, a chilling sensation creeping from his fingertips all the way to his chest.

"Callie! Callie!"

Terrified by his manic sprint, she had already hurried upstairs after him. Hearing him scream her name, she ran toward the voices.

She expected to find him in his own office, but was stunned to see him standing in Hulda's abandoned study.

The corners of the man's eyes were bloodshot, and his lips were literally shaking. "Callie, what the hell is this?"

When she caught sight of the legal document in his hands, she gasped. "What is that? Divorce papers? Whose divorce papers?"

When she stepped closer and saw Herbert's name glaring back at her, her eyes widened to the size of saucers. She was too shocked to even formulate a coherent sentence. "I—I have no idea! Sir, did you find that in Mrs. Jewell's study? I never come in here! And Mrs. Jewell hasn't been home in days..."

Suddenly, a memory slammed into her. "Wait, no! She did come back once a while ago. She said she was dropping something off. I had stepped out to the market, so only Ms. Sinclair was home. By the time I got back, she was already leaving."

Callie vividly remembered walking back from the grocery store and seeing Hulda standing by the front gate.

She had assumed Hulda was finally ready to move back in, and had even tried to pull her inside.

But Hulda had firmly refused, telling Callie to take care of herself.

Because she had been in a rush to start cooking, Callie hadn't thought much of it at the time.

"Wait... did she drop the divorce papers off that day?" Callie stared at Herbert in absolute horror. She simply couldn't fathom that Hulda had actually gone through with it and severed ties completely.

Herbert's grip tightened around the folder, practically crushing the heavy paper. He stared obsessively at the date the decree was finalized.

It was the exact same day the institute had visited H&J Technologies.

The memories crashed over him like a tidal wave.

Her voice echoed in his head: *"You just sign it. I'll handle the rest."*

She hadn't been bluffing...

At the words "divorce papers," all the blood instantly drained from Sylvie's face.

It was over. She was too late.

He had found them!

Before she could resist, Callie dragged her into the study.

Inside, Herbert was standing rigidly by the bookshelf, his knuckles white as he clutched the burgundy folder she had desperately tried to hide.

Hearing her enter, he slowly lifted his eyes to meet hers. The look in them was colder and more terrifying than anything she had ever seen.

"Sylvie Sinclair. Explain."

She flinched violently, staring at him in sheer, paralyzed terror.

She couldn't even remember the last time he had called her by her full name so sternly. He usually referred to her as Ms. Sinclair at work, and privately, he always just called her Sylvie.
