The evacuation pressed on, and as the last of the buses rolled away, the operation finally entered its concluding stages.
Hulda, Abby, and the rest of the team collapsed onto the ground, utterly exhausted.
Mr. Miller was equally drained, slumping onto a stone stool and staring blankly at the looming mountain.
The rain battered the slopes, soaking everyone left behind.
Zane jogged over, panting heavily. "Boss, we've checked everywhere. Everyone is out. The village is totally empty."
"Good," Mr. Miller replied weakly, his heart heavy with an unsettling anxiety.
Right then, his phone rang. He pulled the cracked device from his pocket, his brow furrowing deeply at the caller ID.
Zane caught a glimpse and went pale. "Boss..."
Swallowing hard, Mr. Miller answered. "Sir... Yes... I ordered the evacuation... What? A complaint... It wasn't me..."
The call was clearly from his superior, demanding answers about the unauthorized evacuation following an angry resident's report.
He stumbled over his words, pacing back and forth. By now, it was impossible to tell if his face was covered in sweat or rain.
Zane’s eyes turned bloodshot as he glared furiously at Hulda. "Didn't you say you'd take the blame?! Now our boss is being investigated! Are you happy now?!"
The other local staff glared at her and the team with righteous anger.
"You said a landslide would happen within twenty-four hours! You said we had to hurry! Well, it's been hours! The mountain is fine, the people are fine, and our boss is getting disciplined!"
"You said you'd be responsible! How exactly are you going to do that?!"
Seeing the locals working themselves into a frenzy, Dr. Lynch and Caleb Warren quickly stepped in front of Hulda and Abby to shield them, fearing things might get physical.
"Miller, what is that noise?!" his boss demanded through the receiver.
He stood frozen, his mind short-circuiting at the sight. "Sir... the mountain collapsed..."
"What? What did you say? Speak up!"
"The mountain collapsed!" Mr. Miller finally snapped back to reality. Dropping the call, he screamed at the others, "Get to the cars! Move!"
Zane and the rest bolted toward the vehicles as if waking from a nightmare.
"Ah! Director! We need to go!" Dr. Lynch and Caleb grabbed Hulda and Abby and dragged them into a sprint.
Before Abby even knew what was happening, her feet left the ground. She looked over in a panic, only to be utterly stunned. There was her boss, being practically carried, calmly recording the landslide on her phone.
