She Quit Her Family and Found Herself novel Chapter 249

Truthfully, unless they were talking about a member of the ultra-elite Sterling family, there was hardly anyone in the city these women couldn't get an audience with.

"You—" Joanna desperately wanted to yell out all of Hulda's accomplishments right then and there. But if she started desperately listing off credentials, she'd just look pathetic and defensive. Plus, these snobs probably wouldn't even believe her and would just assume she was making things up.

As Joanna struggled to find the right comeback, the situation suddenly shifted.

Beside her, Hulda raised a hand to elegantly cover her mouth and let out a soft, mocking laugh, perfectly mimicking the women around her.

The sound was crystal clear, like wind chimes catching a breeze.

Mrs. Gower's venomous glare snapped to her. "What exactly is so funny?"

Hulda lowered her hand, her red lips curving upward. "Before I arrived, I was under the impression that this club was a gathering of elegant, intellectual women."

Mrs. Gower raised an eyebrow. Exactly. They were elegant and intellectual.

But Hulda wasn't finished. "Now that I'm here, I realize that 'elegant and intellectual' is just a cheap disguise for bitter and narrow-minded."

"Excuse me?!" Mrs. Gower's face twisted in fury. The snickering women all around the room instantly dropped their smiles.

Hulda's expression remained flawlessly placid. "True elegance requires a broad mind and a welcoming spirit. But clearly, the women in this room—especially those of you giggling in the corners—lack both."

Mrs. Gower's mouth opened and closed in silent rage. If she snapped back now, she'd just be proving Hulda's point that she was bitter and narrow-minded.

Defeated, she glared at Joanna. "Well, your niece certainly has a sharp tongue."

Joanna stared at Hulda, her eyes practically sparkling with stars.
