Master Marr's words were frantic. Completely ignoring Wade Jewell, he practically shoved the older man aside, using his own body to block Hulda Atherton's path. "Seriously, I've never wanted to beat someone this badly in my life! Play one more game with me!"
Wade stumbled from the overly excited Master Marr's shove, nearly taking a highly undignified tumble.
Fortunately, the coach beside him reached out and steadied him just in time.
Wade let himself be supported. His ears and eyes, however, caught every word Master Marr said and every movement he made to keep Hulda from leaving.
His eyes widened in absolute shock.
Reaching out, he grabbed Master Marr's sleeve and stammered, "The... the person you just played against, the one who beat you by half a point... was her?"
Wade pointed a trembling finger at Hulda, his voice so dry it sounded like it was being squeezed from his throat.
But Master Marr was a Go fanatic. Right now, his only priority was pestering Hulda into another match. He didn't have the time or patience to entertain Wade.
It was the coach who had brought Wade over who answered. "That's right, Mr. Jewell. It was this young lady!"
At the coach's affirmative answer, a loud, ringing buzz exploded in Wade's ears, rattling his brain.
He stared at the coach in disbelief, desperately searching the man's eyes for any sign of a joke.
But the coach's gaze was clear, shining with excitement and thrill. He wasn't making this up.
He turned to look at the rest of the crowd in the Match Hall. Almost everyone was staring at Master Marr and Hulda.
The shock and admiration in their eyes were undeniable.
In that moment, Wade felt as if an invisible spike had been driven straight through his head, connecting his ringing ears.
