Hearing Valery turn her crosshairs on Sylvie made Wade's expression shift.
He didn't quite understand why Valery was suddenly grilling the girl.
After all, even Herbert hadn't told them. It made sense that Sylvie kept quiet, too.
Maybe the couple had agreed on it together?
Herbert also couldn't fathom why his mother was suddenly attacking Sylvie over this.
"Mom, keeping it from you was my mistake, but this has nothing to do with Sylvie," he interjected, trying to shield her.
But Valery's expression didn't soften in the slightest. She looked right at him. "Are you telling me the two of you sat down and mutually agreed to hide something this huge from your father and me?"
Herbert froze, glancing over at Sylvie.
He had never actually discussed it with her. He had simply made the unilateral decision not to bring it up, but he had never explicitly instructed her to keep it a secret, either.
But so what?
Sylvie was a sweet, kindhearted girl. She clearly just hadn't wanted his parents to worry either.
Or so Herbert reasoned.
Watching her son's face, Valery instantly knew this wasn't some mutual agreement. Sylvie had deliberately kept her mouth shut.
Her face darkened. "Don't think I'm just lashing out for no reason. If Hulda were just some ordinary woman, I wouldn't care if you told us or not. But is she? If your father and I had known who she was—"
She stopped herself mid-sentence.
