She Turned Her Grief Into Wings novel Chapter 116

"He treated me differently from everyone else. He had plenty of girls around him, but he only had eyes for me."

Shera traced her finger along the railing, her face entirely devoid of expression. She didn't interrupt.

"Later, when our families faced trouble and I was taken abroad, he would still come visit me on every business trip, even if it delayed his schedule. He spent every single birthday with me."

"He even remembers every single one of my preferences."

She turned to look at Shera, her eyes dropping pitifully.

"Ms. Jewell, I can tell he doesn't love you, and you don't have any feelings for him either."

"Since this marriage was purely a business deal from start to finish, could you please just let him go?"

"A marriage without love... why force yourselves to stay tied together and torture each other?"

Hearing this, Shera couldn't help but laugh out loud.

She turned fully to face Helga. "Oh, so you know it was a business deal?"

"I helped him secure his shares. And what did he do? He took the resources that belonged to my father and gave them to you. Your family got to reunite, and I was left with nothing."

She looked the woman up and down, scoffing. "And you're sitting here acting all righteous, telling me to be the bigger person and hand him over to you? As the person who benefited from all this, what right do you have to lecture me?"

"And now you're trying to slap a label on me, calling me the other woman? Where do you get the nerve?"

Shera found it genuinely hilarious. She stood up straight, stating the facts coldly.

"Besides, I have absolutely zero interest in your little childhood romance. So stop putting on this delicate, fragile act, trying to guilt-trip me."

Helga replied, "That's not what I meant."

Shera fired back without a shred of mercy. "Then what do you mean?"

"There's no one else here. You don't need to put on a show for me. Let me make one thing clear: I don't buy your act."

"Nothing you've flaunted today has triggered me in the slightest. I'm not mad at all. Honestly, I kind of pity you."

Shera looked down at her, pulling her shawl tighter around herself.

"Yeah. It's all yours."

"The bracelet is yours, the man is yours, and the title of Mrs. Hayes is yours too."

Helga stared at her, suddenly entirely unable to comprehend the woman standing in front of her.

How could something she found so incredibly precious—something she was willing to risk everything for—mean so utterly little to Shera?

"Are you... really willing to just let it go?"

Shera let out a cold laugh. "It's just trash. What's there to miss? If you like it so much, Ms. Sutton, take it. I've been sick of it for a long time."

She had no energy left to play these mental games. Grabbing her glass from the table, she turned to head inside the cabin.

But the moment she looked back, she crashed straight into a pair of dark, furious eyes.
