She Turned Her Grief Into Wings novel Chapter 12

Aiken looked awkward as he stepped forward to greet her. "Mrs. Hayes."

The blatant guilt written all over his face made Shera want to laugh. Caden was the main character in this drama, yet his assistant was the one acting guilty.

Noticing the medical reports clutched in his hand, Shera said nothing, offering a polite nod. She was about to leave when Aiken called out.

"Mrs. Hayes, um..."

He hesitated, instinctively trying to make excuses for his boss. "They're family friends, after all. It's only natural for Mr. Hayes to visit."

Yes, it was entirely natural.

During the three years Shera’s father was hospitalized, Caden had only visited twice. One of those times, he was already at the hospital for a corporate inspection, and she had practically dragged him upstairs.

They were family friends. They were childhood sweethearts. Meanwhile, she and her father had always been outsiders.

They were never on equal footing. Not in social standing, and certainly not in affection.

Shera nodded, her demeanor as calm as a still well. "Tell him to sign the divorce papers as soon as possible."

Without waiting for Aiken's response, she walked away.

Aiken stood frozen, watching her slender figure disappear around the corner with a heavy sigh.

How did such a perfectly good couple end up like this?

The ward door pushed open, and a delicate figure in white stepped out. Seeing Aiken standing in a daze, she smiled and asked, "What's wrong, Aiken? Is there an issue with the test results?"

Aiken snapped out of it. "No, Ms. Sutton. I'm taking them to the doctor now."

"Alright."

Once Aiken stepped into the elevator, the warm smile faded from Helga's face. She had seen the woman outside the door.

Was that Caden's wife?

She was undeniably beautiful.

Helga had heard the gossip from the Hayes family's maids long ago. Caden had only married that woman to secure his five percent stake in the company, and the woman had agreed purely for the power and wealth of the Hayes Group.

She also knew that the woman's father had been ill, yet Caden had still prioritized her own father's care over his.

Didn't that prove there was no real affection between them? That this marriage had been nothing but a transaction from start to finish?

Helga took the papers, smiling and nodding.

"Sir..." Aiken started hesitantly.

Taking the hint, Helga politely excused herself. "I'll go check on his IV drip."

Caden gave a slight nod. "Make sure he takes his medication on time. I'll arrange for someone to help look after him."

Once the door clicked shut, Aiken lowered his voice. "I ran into your wife just now."

Assuming she was there to care for her father, Caden shot him a sideways glance, signaling him to continue.

Aiken took a deep breath and relayed the message. "She mentioned the divorce agreement. She wants you to finalize it as soon as possible."

Caden's finger paused on his phone screen. He froze for a second before giving a noncommittal "Hmm," his expression unreadable.

Inside the ward, Helga leaned against the door, her fingers curling tightly into her palms.

They were... getting a divorce?
