"He's the link between Zachary and his overseas backers."
The look on Zachary's face earlier was proof enough.
A former assistant suddenly returning out of the blue?
That meant they had been in constant contact all these years. He was likely the one relaying all domestic intel back to Germany.
Or perhaps, he was the one smuggling certain German resources back into the country.
Caden realized that Zachary had probably been setting up the board long before they even realized they were in a game.
He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Let's go."
"Where to next, sir?"
His voice dropped. "The hospital."
——
Everything around her was a hazy, blinding white. Shera felt incredibly light, as if she were floating on air.
The next second, the scenery shifted, and she was suddenly back in her childhood home's courtyard.
She stood next to the massive cutting table. Her father, Lenny Jewell, was wearing his faded tailor's apron, a heavy pair of fabric shears in his hand as he leaned over a piece of silk.
He looked up at her, his eyes warm and gentle, exactly the way she remembered him.
He waved her over. "Come here, sweetie. Let dad show you how to pin the seams."
The tight knot in Shera's chest instantly unraveled. She walked over slowly and stood quietly by his side.
Lenny held a piece of tailor's chalk, explaining the exact pressure needed for the shears as he carefully drew the cutting lines.
Next to the table, a little girl with twin braids stood on her tiptoes, peering over the edge.
Her huge, grape-like eyes blinked up at the man. "Dad, do you think I'll be a famous fashion designer when I grow up?"
The man looked down, gently pinching her chubby cheek, his eyes overflowing with adoration.
"Of course you will. Our Shera is so smart, she's definitely going to be a world-famous designer."
"How famous? Bigger than the sky?"
The man chuckled softly. "Brighter than the sun. Everywhere you go, people will know your name and love your work."
