As the flames roared into the sky, Helga felt the blistering heat radiating through the air around her.
She practically threw the car into a U-turn and sped away from the scene like a bat out of hell.
She drove for nearly ten minutes before the rigid tension in her body finally began to melt away.
Suddenly, a violently intense wave of nausea clawed at her chest.
She slammed the brakes, pulling over to the side of the road, and rolled down the window to greedily gulp in the damp, fresh air.
Cars blurred past her on the road, while her mind went completely and utterly blank.
A sudden, searing burn flared in her ear, and she rubbed at it frantically.
Slowly, her hearing dialed back in, and the color began to return to her ghostly pale face.
This hollow, floating sensation was making her physically ill.
Why was she even here?
What had just happened?
Helga stared at herself in the rearview mirror, painstakingly piecing together the timeline.
She had overheard her father's conversation, then drove to the hospital. Terrified that Rosalie would rat her out, she drove to the detention center.
Then...
The police said she'd been transferred south, so she followed the route.
And then... the crash. The fire.
Helga forced her racing heart to slow, locking eyes with her own reflection.
Rosalie was... dead?
Yes, Rosalie was dead. She had watched it happen with her own two eyes.
The lingering terror in her expression began to fade, replaced first by sheer shock.
Then, slowly, a glimmer of relief sparked in her eyes, blossoming into outright euphoria.
Rosalie was dead.
Which meant... her biggest threat was gone.
No one would ever know about the design competition sabotage or Shera's hit-and-run.
Or the incident in Germany. Or Lucius. Or any of the dirty secrets from her past.
No one would ever know.
She no longer had to live in fear of Rosalie betraying her, and she wouldn't have to constantly bribe her to keep her mouth shut.
All of her past sins had just vanished into that pillar of black smoke.
Helga blinked rapidly, quietly absorbing the sheer magnitude of this revelation.
The corners of her lips twitched upward until a breathless laugh escaped her.
