She Turned Her Grief Into Wings novel Chapter 157

Caden froze. His expression instantly turned freezing cold as he shoved the door open. "Since when did you become such a gossip, Marcus?"

Inside the bedroom, Dewitt was propped up against the headboard, with Zachary and Marcus seated on either side of the bed.

Caden stepped fully into the room, the sharp click of his dress shoes echoing against the hardwood floor.

His father's expression was incredibly grim. Ever since Caden had abruptly walked out of the dinner with Mr. Grant, Dewitt hadn't seen him.

He hadn't answered his calls, and he hadn't come home.

Marcus shot Caden a brief look before turning away.

"What do you mean, gossip? I'm simply stating a fact."

Caden met Zachary's gaze for a fleeting second—a silent, tense greeting—before pulling a chair to the foot of the bed and sitting down.

"I thought you went back to Russia after the birthday banquet. What brings you back so suddenly?"

Marcus let out a derisive scoff. "You nearly ran the company into the ground. This empire was built on the blood and sweat of our ancestors. Of course I had to come back and see the damage for myself."

"Ran it into the ground?"

Caden actually found that funny. "You think losing one contract means the company is dead?"

He stared his uncle down. "You severely underestimate the resilience of the Hayes Group."

He continued seamlessly. "Mr. Grant is angry, yes, but he hasn't publicly blacklisted us. What exactly are you panicking for?"

"Are you hoping to swoop in and play the hero, or are you just eager to kick me while I'm down?"

Marcus glanced nervously at Dewitt before glaring fiercely at Caden.

"You are getting way out of line, Caden. A few years as CEO and you've forgotten who you are?"

Caden leaned back in his chair, casually crossing his legs, looking every bit the ruthless leader of the family.

He offered a faint, unbothered smile. "Who I am? I'm a Hayes. Have you been out of the country so long you've forgotten something that obvious?"

"You..."

Marcus had fully intended to use this moment to lecture and humiliate him, but the younger man shut him down so effortlessly he was left entirely speechless.
