She Turned Her Grief Into Wings novel Chapter 79

"Excuse me, are you family of Mr. Lenny Jewell at Section A, Lot 31?"

Shera stopped and nodded. "Yes, I'm his daughter."

The guard waved her over. "Hold on a second. Someone came to visit a couple of days ago and dropped something by the headstone. The groundskeeper found it. Good thing you're here."

Shera figured it had to belong to whoever left the flowers.

The guard handed her a small drawstring pouch. "I stared at it for ages and still couldn't figure out what it was, but it definitely looks expensive."

Shera opened the pouch and tipped it over. A tiny metal object, no bigger than a fingernail, dropped into her palm.

Curious, Xenia leaned in and raised an eyebrow. "A cufflink?"

She recognized this custom cufflink.

It belonged to Caden.

So, the person who came to pay their respects was Caden? And he was the one who left those things by the grave?

Shera slipped the cufflink back into the pouch and softly thanked the guard.

The guard smiled warmly. "Don't mention it. I'm just glad you took it. If it stayed here any longer, I'd be terrified of losing it."

Port City—

The Pinnacle Manor.

A heavy, ominous sky loomed over the sprawling estate. The European-style manor, nestled halfway up the mountain, was cloaked in thick fog. Across the massive courtyard, the wind violently whipped the trees into distorted shapes.

Beneath the grand Roman columns, men in sharp black suits stood at absolute attention. Ear-pieces securely in place, their sharp, unyielding gazes warned anyone who dared to look their way.

On the third-floor corridor, a group of people with varying expressions clustered outside the master bedroom. Rhys stood by the window, his face a mask of calm as he watched the dark, churning clouds outside.

She locked onto his eyes, a smirk playing on her lips. "You haven't forgotten how he let all those adopted sons torture you over the years, have you?"

"He has a biological son, yet he insisted on raising a pack of wild dogs instead. Sure, the official story was that he wanted to 'toughen you up,' but do you honestly believe that?"

Her attempt to sow discord was blatantly obvious, and she clearly didn't care if he saw right through it.

The Sinclair family had dominated Port City for a century, with deep-rooted connections in both politics and business. Whether in terms of influence or sheer capital, they were unequivocally the most powerful dynasty in the city.

The head of the family, Hector Sinclair, had ruled their empire for decades. Controlling half the wealth in Port City, he was a man whom everyone had to bow to.

A titan of his status could have easily had a harem of women and a massive lineage, but after his original wife died in childbirth, he never remarried. While there was no shortage of women passing through his life, he never allowed a single one to bear his child. Instead, he took in a horde of adopted children.

Everyone assumed it was out of undying devotion to his late wife, that he solely intended to hand the Sinclair empire over to his biological son, Jerome. Yet, he treated his own flesh and blood worse than any of his adopted children, allowing him to be bullied and degraded at every turn.

Eventually, rumors began to swirl that Hector despised his son for causing his wife's death, which was why he brought in the orphans—to let them make Jerome's life a living hell.
