Late at night, Hilda woke up.

A crisp sound tapped against the glass.

—It was raining again.

She gently rolled over and found Luther missing from the bed. Hilda looked quietly into the dark night outside the window. She figured Jolie must be downstairs; this was her usual tactic of clingy obsession. Had Luther gone downstairs to meet her?

Just then, the bedroom door opened softly.

The man lifted the blanket and lay down beside Hilda.

He looked down at her: "I went to check on Annie, not to see her."

Hilda felt a bit embarrassed.

Then she was pulled into the man's embrace. That warm hug felt like the best guarantee, so much so that Hilda almost believed they would finish the rest of their lives together, supporting each other.

...

Two days later, the family dinner.

It was scheduled for noon.

That morning, Aegis Group had a board meeting.

A very important one.

Early in the morning, the man washed up and changed into a dress shirt and slacks. He let Hilda tie his tie. She had been so exhausted by him last night that she could barely straighten her back, but she still forced herself to kneel by the edge of the bed to serve him. Luther looked down at the faint dark circles under her eyes, his voice slightly hoarse: "Work hard this morning and pick up Mom. I'll come straight back for lunch after my meeting. Help entertain the relatives and friends at home, and double-check the gift list."

He spoke to her very gently.

—Meticulous and extremely thoughtful.

He was highly respectful of Gardenia.

Hilda tied his tie and adjusted it a bit.

Luther gently stroked her cheek. Probably because their sex life had been too frequent lately, she looked a bit tired. So he held her hair and said softly: "Once this is over, take some time to rest! Hire an assistant for your outside ventures; don't overwork yourself. You don't need to worry about living expenses at home. If you need money, just take it from the card."

These words truly surpassed those of many loving couples.

Hilda merely smiled faintly.

She thought for a moment and then reminded him—

"Make sure you aren't late at noon."

"My mother has been slighted for years. She cares deeply about face, and even more about my face."

She rarely made demands of Luther.

He said he wanted to spend his life with her.

Then making this request wasn't too much.

Luther nodded, then smiled and touched her cheek again, carrying a somewhat secretive intention. Hilda's face grew a bit hot, but she still feigned composure.

He absolutely couldn't be late on this day.

Otherwise, it would be too disrespectful to his mother-in-law.

Hilda smiled faintly: "Okay, Mom."

But before she could dial out, her own phone rang.

It was actually Sylvan calling. He spoke with a commanding tone: "Hilda, come to the hospital immediately. Jolie got into a car accident and needs a massive blood transfusion. Whatever you're doing right now, drop it and come give Jolie a blood transfusion."

Eleanor heard it, snatched the phone, and spoke very unceremoniously—

"Excuse me, who are you telling to give blood?"

"Does Hilda owe her?"

Sylvan instantly fell silent.

Eleanor hung up and started dialing Luther's number.

But Luther's phone was turned off.

She then called Lori. Lori hesitated for a moment before saying: "Mr. Sanford left the company at ten. He got into a minor car accident on the highway and is at the hospital right now."

Eleanor was utterly speechless.

She couldn't help but look at Hilda.
